Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Australia, someone with this hair colour is often called Blue.

Answer: Red

Well, they are on the wrong side of the planet... See what I mean about confusing? If you want to live dangerously, call a member of the blue rinsed set 'Blue'....
2. Bluebeat is:

Answer: An ancestor of reggae music

From the West Indies in the 1960s - sort of halfway between calypso and reggae.
3. Bluebottle is:

Answer: All of these

If you don't know the 'Goon Show', get Googling (or Altavistaing or Jeevesing...)
4. Bluejacket is:

Answer: All of these

Why do so many navies dress in blue? Can't be for camouflage... Bluejacket, Ohio was founded by the brothers 'Uncle' Charlie and 'Shawnee' Tom Bluejacket in about 1871. The plant is Tradescantia ohioensis and by a strange coincidence is found in Ohio. No connection at all. Nor is there any apparent connection with sailors. Well, I thought it was interesting...
5. Bluemantle is:

Answer: A pursuivant of the British College of Arms

The others are Portcullis Pursuivant, Rouge Croix Pursuivant, and Rouge Dragon Pursuivant. No, I'm NOT making this up, and it's NOT in a game! Greenmantle was a character in a Scott novel, "Redgauntlet".
6. Blue Peter is (/was):

Answer: A blue flag with a white square in the middle

The Tin Lizzie was the Ford Model T, and there were truck versions - but they were usually black like most Fords of the time. The Blue Peter means a ship is about to leave harbour - so get a move on there....
7. Blue funk is:

Answer: A state of great terror

There really is something called dunderfunk, but it's in one of my other quizzes, so I'm not telling you here... Funk can mean a type of music (but I don't think anyone has crossed reggae with ragtime) or a nasty smell, or terror. Come to think of it, the smell might well accompany the terror....
8. Blue Blood is (/was):

Answer: Being an aristocrat

Can't understand the blue blood bit with aristocrats - enough of them got their heads or other bits cut off for people to see there was no difference in blood colour. Look up Diego Garcia.
9. Kerry Blue is (/was):

Answer: An Irish terrier with a bluish coat

That was dolly blue - a little bag with a wooden peg in it that was swished in the washing water. Kerry Gold make cheese (and lots of other dairy things) but not a Kerry Blue cheese. Not yet, anyway... Just watch them bring one out now just to spite me...
10. Russian Blue is:

Answer: A shorthaired blue cat

A very dignified, severe looking cat with bluish grey fur. The opponents of the Reds were the White Russians, not to be confused with the White Russians who are now known as Belarussians (Belarus meaning White Russia...)
11. Bluethroat and bluetongue are different names for the same condition.

Answer: False

They're not even conditions! A bluethroat is a bird related to the British robin and the thrushes, which has a blue throat. Now, isn't that surprising? A bluetongue is otherwise known as a bluetongued lizard, and lives in Australia. Unless it lives in a zoo somewhere else, that is.
12. Blue vitriol is:

Answer: A form of copper sulphate

Cupric sulphate pentahydrate - CuSO4.5H2O. Those lovely blue crystals from the science lab in school... They probably do make some sort of cheese on Mount Etna, but I don't know what it's called. And I don't care either - not until I set a quiz on cheeses (watch out then...)
13. A blue racer is:

Answer: A fast slender North American snake

Coluber constrictor foxii (or possibly Coluber constrictor flaviventris in a blue form - they seem to be arguing about this!). Sounds more like an incantation or spell... Occurs in USA and Canada and is the fastest snake in Iowa (which you probably don't want to know). Don't worry, it only gets up to about 4 mph. So they say, anyway...
14. Blue John is (/was):

Answer: A sort of blue to purple mineral from Derbyshire

It's a form of fluorspar with stuff in it that gives the colour. You can visit four cave/mine systems in Castleton, Derbyshire, which is the only place in the world where Blue John is found. (OK, two vases made from it were found in Pompeii, but they came from Castleton or whatever it was called at the time.) By the way, if you've been answering 'pirate' to any of these questions, you're probably confused between Bluebeard (who wasn't) and Blackbeard (who was). Funny thing - I left Bluebeard out of the quiz. Hard luck if you knew who he was...
15. The Blue Mountains are:

Answer: All of these

The coffee comes from the Jamaican Blue Mountains. (Well, you didn't really expect it to be grown in Oregon, did you? You did? Take those geography classes again....) That's the lot, folks, and I do hope you're not feeling TOO blue after it.
