The USO was formed in 1941 by a request from President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who determined it would be best if private organizations handled the on-leave recreation of the U.S. armed forces. Roosevelt's call to action led six civilian agencies to coordinate their civilian war efforts and resources to form a new organization - the USO (United Service Organizations).
In the 1960's, for the first time in its history, USO centers were located in combat zones. Many entertainers risked their lives, and some even lost them, to provide this important service to American troops.

1) Bob Hope received the Congressional Gold Medal from John F. Kenedy on Sept 11, 1963. 2), 3) and 7) Bob Hope entertained troops on USO tours during WWII, Vietnam, The Korean War, and Desert Storm, as well as during peacetime. In 1997 Bob Hope was designated an honorary veteran for his humanitarian services to the United States Armed Forces by Congress.

He is the only individual in history to have earned this honor. 4) Bing Crosby and Bob Hope made a number of movies together, including 7 "Road" Pictures with Dorothy Lamour 5) Bob Hope died July 27th, 2003, at the age of 100. 6)The U.S.O. had a tradition of sending Bob Hope on tour to entertain members of the armed forces during the Christmas holiday season.

The first Christmas tour was in 1948 in Berlin, Germany. Nine of Bob Hope's Christmas tours included Vietnam. 8) As a young man, Hope tried his hand at boxing under the name Packy East.

He loved to joke about his failed boxing career, and once said "I ruined my hands in the ring ... the referee kept stepping on them.". 9)He did USO tours for more than 50 years, from 1942 to 1945, and from 1948 until 1983 without missing a year, and continued to make them in 1987 and 1990.
