Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following creatures is a kind of fowl and has no other meaning?

Answer: Australorp

The Australorp is an Australian breed of fowl. The word has no other meaning. A Dalmatian is a dog, a lemon is a fruit, a colour and a poor example, and a Toyota is a car - among other things! Even if you never heard of an Australorp (pretty speckled chook) then you should have got it by a process of elimination.
2. Which of the following is a horse colour and also means "to demand payment"?

Answer: dun

A dun horse is a light brownish colour with dark points. The verb "to dun" meant to demand payment. Regency bucks were always being dunned.

A chestnut is a horse that is a brownish tan. It is also a nut tree.

A grey horse is grey or white. Grey is also the colour human hair goes eventually. (This is spelt 'gray' in the US.)

A bay horse is brown with black legs, mane and tail. A bay is also an inlet and a sound made by a wolf or hound.
3. What five-letter word beginning with P and ending with E is almost a synonym for "fairy" or "elf"?

Answer: pixie

A pixie is a "little person, like a fairy, elf or gnome". I hope you got it. Not many words (surely) are spelled P-x-e. (Although so many people found alternative answers to my AmandA, BoraciC and BananA word quizzes I was starting to wonder.)
4. Which of the following birds is the closest relative to a cockatoo?

Answer: parrot

Cockatoos are closely related to parrots. A major difference is that all cockatoos have crests, while parrots almost never do. As one funtrivia-ite pointed out to me, the Horned Parakeet has a crest. I'd never heard of it, so there you are!

Crows and cockatoos both hop impressively, but are not related.

Finches have similar beaks but are not related.

Swans also live in Australia and can also be black, but (guess what?) they're not related!
5. If a horse is lame, what part of it is sore?

Answer: hoof or leg

A lame horse almost certainly has a sore hoof or leg. It may also have a sore back, but the other pains in ear, tail etc would not cause lameness.
6. Which of these is not a fruit?

Answer: Pair

Pears are fruit, but a pair means "two". Peaches, plums and apples are most definitely fruit... and also, coincidentally, share another meaning; "good".

The apple of his eye! A peach of a person! A plum part!

Simple spelling should have told you this one.
7. Which of these plants would you be unlikely to drink in any form?

Answer: Tobacco

You can drink tea made from tea leaves, and you might like carrot juice and either grape juice or wine... but you wouldn't really drink tobacco if you wanted to live long... although that's what someone once described smoking as! (According to the quiz I did the other day... amazing what Funtrivia-ites know.)
8. A famous TV programme starring David Hasselhoff as Fox Scully and Pamela Anderson as Dana Mulder was called "The X-Files". Is this true or false?

Answer: False

"The X-Files" starred David Duchovny as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully, but David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson were never in it. They did star in "Baywatch", however!
9. Singer Gordon Sumner, who came to fame with the group "The Police", is best known by a one-word insect-related name. What is it?

Answer: Sting

Sting has used that name for years. Even if you have never heard of him you should have got that.

"Spider" has nothing to do with insects - a spider is an arachnid.

An "Eagle" is a bird or a golf score, not an insect.

"Bee Bee", although sounding like an insect, is two words.
10. Which of the following do the words Pig, Porcupine, Pen and Puma have in common?

Answer: They all begin with P.

A pen is a bird and a writing implement, and a "Puma" is a shoe brand, but other than that... well, I just hope you recognise an easy question when you see it!

Did ya do it? Did ya get 10/10? Is my quiz EASY?
