Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. TELEVISION: Which of the following American Civil War battles is NOT depicted in the miniseries "North and South"?

Answer: Battle of Shiloh

The Civil War battles depicted in the miniseries are: First Manassas (Bull Run), Sharpsburg (Antietam), Gettysburg, The Wilderness and Third Petersburg. Other battles, like Shiloh, Fort Donelson or Cold Harbor are mentioned, but not depicted. While the miniseries' title is an obvious refernce to the American Civil War, the War itself is depicted only in the second season, entitled "Love and War".
2. SPORTS: When and where were the first Modern Olympics held?

Answer: 1896, Athens

The first Modern Olympics were held in Athens, capital of Greece, birthplace of the Games. The most gold medals were won by the USA, while the most medals were won by Greece. There were 122 medals given in total, including 43 gold, 43 silver and 36 bronze.
3. MUSIC: What was the name of the sixth album by "The Doors", as well as the last one to feature the group's lead vocalist, Jim Morrison?

Answer: L.A. Woman

The album was released in 1971. It contained the song with the same name, as well as other famous songs by "The Doors", such as "Riders on the Storm", "Love Her Madly" and "Been Down So Long". Three months after the album's release, Jim Morrison was found dead in his Paris residence.
The three incorrect choices were made up.
4. MOVIES: Which of the following actors was NOT in the cast of "Casablanca"?

Answer: Mary Astor

Although Mary Astor had co-starred with the film's main protagonist, Humphrey Bogart, in the film "The Maltese Falcon", she had no part in "Casablanca".
Peter Lorre plays the part of a local minor crook, entitled Ugarte, who boasts to have in his possession letters of transit which he obtained by murder and which he smuggles to Rick Blaine before his arrest and death.
Madeleine LeBeau played the part of Yvonne, Rick's girlfriend, who Rick discards after a brief period.
Claude Rains plays the corrupt inspector Louis Renault, who finally teams up with Rick.
5. LITERATURE: The phrase "Alas, Poor Yorick", from the play "Hamlet", is one of the most well-known lines written by William Shakespeare. But, what was Yorick's occupation in the Royal Court of Denmark?

Answer: Jester

From Hamlet's words about Yorick, we can understand that the prince was very fond of the jester. It is suggested that Shakespeare wanted the audience to make a parallel between Yorick and Richard Tarlton, a pre-Shakespearean performer whose performances helped make the theater a form of mass entertainment.
6. PEOPLE: Which of the following military geniuses said "Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more, you should never wish to do less"?

Answer: Robert E. Lee

Robert E. Lee was born in 1807, in Westmoreland County, Virginia, USA. His father was "Light Horse Harry" Lee, who had been a Virginia governor. Robert E. Lee served as a Captain in the US Army during the Mexican-American War, but he is mostly remembered a Confederate General in the American Civil War. One of the best tacticians in the world, he earned some great victories against his Union opponents, such as Gaines' Mill, Second Manassas (Bull Run), Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Cold Harbor before surrendering at Appomattox Court House. Today, he remains one of the most important cultural icons of the American South.
7. WORLD: One of the most impressive sculptures in the world is "Christ the Redeemer" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but when was it completed?

Answer: 1931

The dedication date of the sculpture was October 12, 1931. The sculpture was designed by engineer Heito de Silva Costa and Polish-French sculptor Paul Landowski was commissioned to sculpt it, assisted by Albert Caquot. The face was made by the Romanian Gheorghe Leonida. The posture of Jesus Christ in the sculpture represents both peace and the Christian cross.
8. RELIGION: In the Book of Exodus, we can find the story of Moses and the Ten Plagues Egypt suffered because the Pharaoh would not release the Israelites from bondage. Which of the following was NOT one of the Ten Plagues?

Answer: Death of the Pharaoh

The Ten Plagues were: 1) Water into blood, 2) Frogs, 3) Lice, 4) Flies, 5) Diseased livestock, 6) Boils, 7) Thunderstorm of hail and fire, 8) Locusts, 9) Three days' darkness, 10) Death of the Firstborn. The Pharaoh himself did not die, but he was afraid that the wrath of God would result to his won death. So, he ordered the release of the Israelites. Yet, the Pharaoh sent his army against them and tried to intercept their passage at the Red Sea.

However, God allowed His people to escape and the pursuing Egyptian army was drowned.
9. GEOGRAPHY: The archipelago of Tierra del Fuego is split between two South American countries. Which ones?

Answer: Chile and Argentina

Chile and Argentina is the correct answer. Chile controls the western half, while Argentina the eastern. The Chilean part is listed as a province under the name Tierra del Fuego, which belongs into the Region of Magallanes, officially called "XII Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica".

The Argentinian part is a province styled Tierra del Fuego, consisting of four departments, including the Argentinian Antarctica, a disputed area, since the Argentinian land claims overlap with that of Chile and the UK.
10. HUMANITIES: The image shows a small part of the painting "The School of Athens". Which two philosophers are depicted in the shown segment?

Answer: Plato and Aristotle

The painting is a work by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael. It was made when the artist was commissioned to decorate a part of the Apostolic palace in the Vatican, with this part being now known as Stanze de Raffaelo.
In the image, Aristotle is the right figure and Plato the left. Plato is holding the book "Timaeus", in which the philosopher first presents the idea of the existence of Atlantis, presented as a story the philosopher and lawmaker Solon had heard from Egyptian priests, a claim made by Plato but frowned upon by Aristotle.
