László Bíró was a Jewish-Hungarian newspaperman who was frustrated by the amount of smudges that fountain pens caused. He combined the quick-drying ink of the newspaper press with the ballpoint idea and the modern ballpoint pen was born. Alas, since he was Jewish, he was forced to flee Europe in 1941. Having landed in Argentina, Bíró was able to repatent his idea and it was extremely successful.
