Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you happened to open your tool kit and found a grease gun, tyre iron and lug wrench among other things, which of these professionals would you be?

Answer: Mechanic

A grease gun is a hand powered tool used for lubrication. A lug wrench is a tool used to tighten or turn nuts on the wheels of vehicles. The term is more common in the US whereas in the UK it is known as a wheel brace. The lug wrench is sometimes incorporated with a tyre iron which is used for working with tyres that have inner tubes.
2. People following which occupation are most likely to use a webbing stretcher and rubber mallet?

Answer: Upholsterer

A webbing stretcher is used to pull the fabric tight and ensure a good fit. An upholsterer may also use a rubber mallet to join tight fitting parts.
3. Before the computer became ubiquitous, which of these would you spot taking notes on a dictation machine or changing the ribbon of the typewriter?

Answer: Secretary

Earlier most bosses dictated letters and other things that had to be typed to a secretary who took them down using a dictation machine, a device that recorded conversations, or noted them using shorthand, a shortened writing method. The documents were later typed out on a typewriter.

The typewriter ribbon contained pigment or ink and had to be changed periodically when the ink became too light to read.
4. Who among the following will be most likely to use terms like indemnity, premiums, pre-existing condition and deductible?

Answer: Insurance broker

Insurance brokers are responsible for selling insurance contracts to retail customers on behalf of the insurance companies. They are usually paid some part of the contract amount as commission for sourcing the deal. A pre-existing condition is one that existed prior to signing the contract and is not covered by the insurance company.

A deductible is that portion of the total insurance claim that has to be paid by the buyer of the insurance. Premium is the regular payment made by the buyer and indemnity is the compensation paid by the company to the buyer for any loss.
5. Which of the following will be most familiar with terms like snake eyes, one-eyed royals and flush?

Answer: Croupier

A croupier is a card dealer in a casino and the terms in the question refer to dice or playing cards. Snake eyes is used when a pair of dice both turn up showing one pip. One-eyed royals refer to the face cards where the profile shows only one eye. A flush is a hand where all the cards belong to the same suit.
6. Walking through the village, which of these are you likely to see using a hammer and anvil to shape metal on a forge?

Answer: Ironmonger

An ironmonger, commonly also called a blacksmith, works with iron and sometimes steel to create different types of objects. The occupation even finds a place in various mythological stories with Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and smithery and his Greek counterpart, Hephaestus being the most notable examples.
7. Which of these will be most interested in lattice work, flying buttresses and cupolas?

Answer: Architect

Lattice work is an ornamental framework with criss-crossing patterns. In Indian architecture it is used to ensure privacy while still allowing the room to be ventilated. A buttress is an architectural feature used to support a wall. Flying buttresses are representative of Gothic church architecture. A cupola is a small dome like structure generally located at the top of the building.
8. On board a ship, who is responsible for charting the passage of the vessel, monitoring its movement and being able to determine the exact location of the vessel using techniques like dead reckoning?

Answer: Navigator

A navigator's responsibilities also include maintaining nautical charts of the ship and ensuring a safe passage for the vessel as far as possible. Dead reckoning is a process wherein the position of the ship is determined based on its earlier location and the estimated distance travelled since then.

A major flaw in this process is that errors made during the journey get compounded as subsequent calculations are based on them.
9. Which professional would use an instrument called a theodolite to measure angles and a technique called triangulation to determine the exact position?

Answer: Surveyor

The theodolite measures angles in vertical and horizontal planes. Triangulation refers to the process of determining a location by measuring the angles to it of known points or locations. The technique has now been largely replaced by the Global Positioning System. Civil engineering is largely dependent on surveyors for carrying out the preliminary work before construction begins.
10. You're probably wondering what happened to the metronome in the quiz title. The first letters of the answers to Q1-9 will spell out the band of professionals who use a metronome.

Answer: Musicians

A metronome is a device used by musicians to regulate the tempo of a piece of music. The roots of the word can be traced to Greek with "metron" meaning measure and "nomos" meaning regulate. The opinion of composers on this device appears to be divided with notable composers including Felix Mendelssohn, Giuseppe Verdi and Johannes Brahms having objected to its use.
