My African Safari: Namibia Trivia Quiz

On our recent safari, my wife and I began with a few days on a Chobe River houseboat. On one bank was Botswana, subject of an earlier quiz. The other shore placed us in Namibia. This quiz is about the people, places, animals and sights of that nation.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Namibia gained independence from South Africa in 1990. Prior to WWI, which European power colonized Namibia?

Answer: Germany

From 1884 to 1919, Namibia was known as German Southwest Africa. The Kaiser's colonial rule was particularly harsh including near genocide of the Herero and Namaqua tribes. With Germany's defeat in WWI, the territory was placed under control of South Africa as a League of Nations protectorate.
2. Our safari was during the wettest part of the year so our game-viewing trips took us into flooded areas where we had to stay alert for the second largest reptile in the world. What denizen of sub-Saharan Africa were we wary of?

Answer: Nile Crocodile

Only its saltwater cousin in Asia and Australia outsizes the Nile Crocodile. During the mid 20th century, crocs were hunted for their durable and attractive skins, becoming endangered. Protective laws and conservation efforts have brought the population back to sustainable levels.
3. Freedom House is a human rights organization which rates nations on their level of political, economic, press and other liberties. From 2010 through 2014 Namibia ranked among the freest of African nations.

Answer: True

Freedom House considers Namibia a fully functioning democracy. Namibians enjoy considerable political, social and economic freedom.
4. Another resident of the flood plains that we were alert for looks to be fat, slow and lazy. But people who underestimate this water loving mammal do so at their own risk. What "river horse" kills up to 3000 people in Africa every year?

Answer: Hippopotamus

Unobservant tourists or villagers can inadvertently place themselves between a mama hippo and its baby. That's not a good place to be as an angry hippo can easily outrun a human with unhappy results for the human.
5. Namibia's unit of currency is the Namibian Rand.

Answer: False

When Namibia planned the conversion of its currency from the South African Rand after achieving independence, consideration was given to both the Namibian Mark and the Namibian Dollar. The Namibian Dollar (N$) was chosen as the nation's currency.
6. The northeastern panhandle of Namibia which we visited is named after the German Chancellor who negotiated its annexation to German Southwest Africa. What is the name of this wettest part of Namibia?

Answer: Caprivi Strip

Chancellor Leo von Caprivi negotiated a treaty which gave a very narrow strip of land to Germany, providing its colony with access to the Zambezi River and, he thought, a route to the Indian Ocean through Tanganyika, Germany's other African colony. It was later discovered that Victoria falls and rough rapids made the Zambezi unnavigable.
7. The people of the Caprivi region of Namibia belong to a tribal group which lives in the floodplains of the Zambezi River. Their culture is based heavily on twice yearly migrations from "wet" to "dry" villages and back as the Zambezi's floodwaters rise and subside. Who are these fascinating people?

Answer: Lozi

The chief of the 800,000 Lozi is called the Litunga. During the annual Kuomboka festival the Litunga moves his capitol from Lealui in the flood plain to Limulunga which remains dry. The spectacle of the chief, wives and several hundred warriors rowing huge canoes across the Zambezi flood is a pretty amazing sight.
8. Another sight that surprised us was small groups of Africa's most dangerous bovine stranded on small grass islands in the flooded regions. Which ill-tempered animal, one of the continent's top five hunting trophies, did we see?

Answer: Cape Buffalo

Cape Buffalo don't kill as many Africans as hippos and crocodiles do, but they're not to be trifled with. During our visit a nearby farmer went to tend his cattle herd not noticing that a buffalo had joined them to graze. The farmer was killed when the buffalo attacked.
9. What is the most commonly spoken language in Namibia?

Answer: Afrikaans

Although English is Namibia's official language, more Namibians speak Afrikaans as their first language than any other. German is the next most common followed by numerous indigenous languages.
10. The flooded areas of Namibia's Caprivi Strip are home to a huge variety of waterfowl. One of the most common is Alopochen Aegyptiaca whose English name sounds as if it could serve as Christmas dinner for a Pharaoh. What is this attractive waterfowl?

Answer: Egyptian Goose

The Egyptian Goose is strikingly colored and has been taken to other parts of the world for ornamental purposes. Feral colonies of escaped pets have been reported in Western Europe. It is native to most of sub-Saharan Africa and the Nile valley.
