Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. John Cleese once described this town by saying: "If you ever do want to kill yourself, but lack the courage, I think a visit to _______ will do the trick."

Answer: Palmerston North

Palmerston North is a city located in the lower North Island of New Zealand. Known mostly for being the home of Massey University and near-by Linton Army Base, "Palmy" has a reputation for being quite dull. Refer to http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/John_Cleese for more information.
2. Which street is notorious in Wellington for being the local haunt of transsexual prostitutes?

Answer: Marion Street

Did you think it was Vivian St? Nope, that's where all the brothels are, transexual prostitutes prefer the dark corners of Marion Street. In good old kiwi humor there is a prostitute painted provocatively on a building wall at the street corner.
3. What is the New Years Eve dance festival in Gisborne called?

Answer: Rhythm and Vines

Located in a vineyard in Gisborne, Rhythm and Vines attracts young people and the best bands from all around the country. It lasts for a day and a night of great chilled-out music at one of NZ's most beautiful beach towns. It's the place you've got to be on December 31 one time in your life. Gisborne is also the first city in the world to see in the new year!
4. Who is the "mother of the nation"?

Answer: Judy Bailey

Miss Lucy is a travel agency pin-up girl, Helen Clark, the 2007 Prime Minister and the Queen is almost completely irrelevant to NZ's day-to-day life. The correct answer was of course Judy Bailey! She was the beloved TV1 newsreader who retired at the end of 2005 after 34 years helping NZ through the good and bad times.
5. Which person did NOT win in the initial three series of NZ Idol?

Answer: Michael Murphy

Michael was deputy head boy in 2004 before Idol, at his high school Taupo-nui-a-Tia College.
6. The television program 'Shortland Street' has been gracing our screens since:

Answer: 25th May 1992

In 2005 and 2006, Shortland Street was consecutively rated the favorite show by Woman's Day magazine readers.
7. Who/What/Where/When is Waikikamukau?

Answer: An imaginary rural village, a racehorse and a book

It's an imaginary rural village, a racehorse and a book. Most commonly understood to be a village by New Zealanders, most are unaware the village is imaginary! Until recently I thought it was somewhere up north! Refered to the same as others would say, Timbuktu or wop-wops. Anyway, it's pronounced "Why kick a moo-cow" and plays on Maori sounds and English words.
8. What is the Kakapo?

Answer: A native parrot that is flightless and nocturnal

The three incorrect answers are total rubbish.
9. Which celebrity was NOT born in New Zealand?

Answer: Sam Neill

Slightly tricky- you would have to be a big fan.
10. "Kiwis love, hot pools, rugby balls, McDonald's, snapper schools, world peace, woolly fleece, Ronald and raising beasts, chilly bins, cricket wins, fast skis, golf tees, silver ferns, kauri trees, _________, love one please." What's in the gap?

Answer: kiwiburgers

All Kiwi's aged 10 plus will remember this McDonald's advertisement for the Kiwiburger and the lyrics you just read in the question. GOLD!
