Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There is an American candy called Shark Bites, fruit-flavored candies shaped like sharks. The original colors were red, orange, yellow, purple and white. Which one of these was the 'mystery flavor'?

Answer: White

Nobody seems quite sure what the flavor of the White Shark is. Some people think its flavor is a subtle version of one of the others, but that it is changed from batch to batch, so it is not always the same. Others think it is a blend of fruit flavors, so that different people perceive a resemblance to different elements of the mixed fruit flavor. Strangely, the Yellow Sharks were strawberry flavored, not the lemon or pineapple one might have expected.

Despite the big-toothed shark pictured on the box, the candies are less likely to bite than to be bitten.
2. In 2004, the animated film 'Shark Tale' told the story of Oscar, an ambitious young wrasse who made a play for fame and fortune by taking credit for the death of a shark who was actually killed accidentally while punishing Oscar for failure to pay an overdue debt. Which actor, a princely performer who has received Oscar nominations as Best Actor for his roles in 'Ali' (2001) and 'The Pursuit of Happyness' (2006), provided the voice of Oscar?

Answer: Will Smith

Will Smith started in showbiz as a rapper, using the title of The Fresh Prince. This persona was transferred to the television series 'Fresh Prince of Bel-Air'(1990-1996), from which he made the move to the big screen. His first film was 'Where the Day Takes You' (1992), in which he played the part of Manny, a crippled beggar.

Oscar, the hero of 'Shark Tale', got into trouble with some loan sharks (literally), and was being punished by two of the head shark's sons when a falling anchor killed one of them. When he was found alone with the body, he allowed everyone to think he had done it, and basked in the resulting acclaim. Eventually, however, he recovered his sense of proportion, helped the head of the shark family accept that his vegetarian son was a loved member of the community who should not be forced to participate in the family business, and settled down with Angie, the angelfish voiced by Renee Zellwegger who had loved him all along.
3. There are a number of islands in the world called Shark Island. If you visit this particular one, you will see the suburbs of Point Piper, Vaucluse and Rose Bay on nearby shores, and one of the world's most famous bridges, which has a white building with sail-shaped roof near its base. In the harbour of which city is this Shark Island located?

Answer: Sydney, Australia

The other Shark Islands have their own stories, but the one in Sydney Harbour was given its name because someone fancied its shape resembled that of a shark. I think it looks more like a sperm whale, personally. It is a small island, roughly 250 m long and 100 m wide, which has been used at various times as a quarantine station and as a naval depot.

In 1975 it was decreed to be part of the Sydney Harbour National Park, and its use is for recreational activities only. You can get there by ferry for a picnic.
4. A card shark is someone who is highly skilled at playing card games, with a suggestion that they may cheat to achieve that success. What was the name of the Western that originally aired from 1957 to 1962, and featured (at various times) three brothers and their cousin, all expert poker players?

Answer: Maverick

'Maverick' started with James Garner starring as Bret Maverick, a poker player who roamed the towns of the Old West and cruised on Mississippi riverboats, making a living from his skill at playing cards and reading people. Every episode saw him getting into some kind of trouble, often involving a beautiful woman, and usually a lot of money and illicit schemes of one sort or another. It was soon realized that the show was taking too long to produce on a weekly basis, so it was decided to set up two parallel units, screening in alternate weeks, with two different Maverick characters. The intentional similarity of character names, appearances and personalities made it very confusing for the casual viewer, who might wonder why the name had changed since the last time they watched the show, or whether they had just remembered it incorrectly.

During the first season, Bret's brother Bart, played by Jack Kelly, was added. Subsequent episodes featured either one of the brothers, or sometimes both. For the fourth season, James Garner had left, so his character was replaced by a cousin, Beau Maverick, played by Roger Moore. Later that season a third brother (never previously mentioned) named Brent was added to the cast, and played by Robert Colbert. Just before then, Roger Moore had left, so Brent and Bart were the alternating characters. After Colbert left, the last season was compiled using new Bart episodes alternating with reruns of Bret episodes from the first seasons.
5. Which Australian golfer was nicknamed 'The Great White Shark' because of his pale hair, aggressive style of play, and origin in a country renowned for the dangerous sharks in the waters off its coast?

Answer: Greg Norman

Gregory John Norman was born in the mining town of Mt Isa, Queensland in 1955. He participated in a number of sports as a youth, and didn't take up golf until he was 15. By the age of 20 he had turned professional, and gained his first tournament victory in 1976 at the West Lakes Classic in Adelaide, South Australia.

Much more success was to follow, including 331 weeks ranked at Number 1, and victories at The British Open in 1986 and 1993. Despite all his success, many Australians recall him more for his failures - he came oh so close so many times, but never won any more majors, and had some heartbreaking losses.
6. In the episode of the television show 'The Simpsons' titled 'The Twisted World of Marge Simpson', Marge found her small business in need of assistance, and (due to Homer's intervention) got herself mixed up with Springfield's resident loan shark and mob boss, Fat Tony. What was the name of the franchise in which Marge had invested her money and time?

Answer: Pretzel Wagon

Having been expelled from the investment group because she was uncomfortable with the high-risk investments they were discussing, Marge decided to use the money they returned to her to invest on her own. At a conveniently-timed franchise exposition, Marge was about to invest in the exotic-sounding Fleet-a-Pita business when the investment group beat her to it.

She eventually found a do-it-yourself pretzel business, and set herself up cooking in her kitchen. What with competition from the pitas and a disastrous 'Free Pretzel Day' promotion at the baseball game, she was ready to give up when Homer arranged for Fat Tony to help.

He ensured that businesses all over town became eager pretzel purchasers, but then announced that he was entitled to 100% of her profits in return.

When Fat Tony's boys arrived at the Simpson house to demand payment, the investment group showed up with Japanese gangsters to convince Marge to close her kitchen; under cover of the ensuing battle, the Simpson's retreated to their house and the entire incident, as usual, was over with no ongoing consequences for future episodes.
7. There are a lot of sporting teams around the world that call themselves the Sharks. Which one of these cities has a Rugby League team called the Sharks?

Answer: Cronulla, NSW (Australia)

The Cronulla Sharks joined the New South Wales Rugby League in January, 1967. In their first 45 years of competition, they failed to win the premiership, although they were minor premiers (meaning they had the best record at the end of the home-and-away part of the competition) in 1988 and 1999. One of their best-known players was Andrew Ettinghausen, known as ET, who played for Cronulla from 1983 until 2000, and represented both the state of New South Wales and the country of Australia on multiple occasions. Following his retirement from rugby league, he went on to have a career on television, including 'Escape with ET', a fishing show which he both produced and hosted.

The Worcester Sharks play ice hockey, the Shanghai Sharks are a basketball team, and the Jacksonville Sharks belong to the Arena Football League, playing an indoor version of American gridiron football.
8. In the 1961 film 'The Hustler', would-be pool shark Fast Eddie Felson wants to prove himself to be the best player in the country by defeating the legendary Minnesota Fats. Who played the character of Minnesota Fats?

Answer: Jackie Gleason

Paul Newman played Eddie Felson, who challenges Minnesota Fats and loses, both his money and his confidence in himself. After most of the movie is spent watching him struggle to regain his dream, we watch him triumphantly face Minnesota Fats again. He wins the match, but loses the girl, and any future in pool halls because he has crossed his manager. Jackie Gleason played Minnesota Fats, a character that Rudolf Wanderone claimed was based on himself and his prowess at pool, and Will Mosconi, a famous pool player of the time, appeared briefly as the man who held the stake money when Eddie and Fats were confronting one another.
9. In 1991 English artist Damien Hirst created an artwork titled 'The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living'. What kind of artwork is it?

Answer: A tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde, enclosed in a glass tank

The work was originally commissioned by art gallery owner Charles Saatchi, and used a 4.3-metre long tiger shark caught near Hervey Bay in Queensland, Australia. It deteriorated within a few years, either due to poor initial preservation, or due to poor maintenance.

In 1993 the skin was stretched over a fiberglass frame, but the artist wasn't satisfied with the verisimilitude of the result. In 2006 the shark was replaced with another one, again from Queensland. There has been some debate in the art world as to whether this can still be considered the same work of art - the concept remains the same, but the actual content has changed. Of course, there has also been debate as to whether it is art or not - lots of people have preserved sharks for display in museums, without having them considered as works of art worth millions of dollars. Steven Cohen, who purchased 'The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living' in 2004, is rumored to have paid between 8 and 12 million dollars.
10. Next time you visit New York City, you can take a ride on a number of different cruises provided by Circle Line Downtown. One of their cruise options is on a boat called SHARK. What experience does it offer for tourists?

Answer: Speedboat thrill ride around the harbor

Circle Line offer all of these, and many more. The speedboat rides use SHARK, while standard ferries take you to the Statue of Liberty, and the yacht ZEPHYR is used for many of the cruises. In the right season, you can see foliage, on a tour that also includes the Little Red Lighthouse (located under the George Washington Bridge, and star of a story I loved as a child - I remember seeing it as one of the highlights if my first visit to New York when I was about ten).

There are also themed cruises (Tropical Oasis, for example, encourages passengers to imagine they are cavorting in the tropics rather than NYC, and most major holidays feature an appropriate theme for the evening), and the yacht can be hired for private functions.
