The Declaration of Independence was signed and dated on July 4th, 1776, by 55 men, declaring freedom from Great Britain. Ben Gates discovers that there is an invisible map on the back of this historic document, and ultimately steals it, in part to save it from his adversary Ian Howe, played by Sean Bean, who is after the treasure for his own selfish gain.

The movie also starred Diane Kruger and Justin Bartha, whose characters aided Gates in his finding of the treasure.
