Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Ulysses S. Grant, Thomas Jefferson, Salmon P. Chase. What do they have in common?

Answer: Their portraits appeared on U.S. currency in the second half of the 20th century.

This was the series of bills that were replaced around the turn of the century. Franklin was on the 100, Hamilton on the 10, Grant on the 50, Jefferson on the 2, Chase on the 10,000, a bill most of us have never seen, unless we went to that casino in Vegas that had them on display. Only Grant and Jefferson were Presidents. Hamilton was born in Nevis, a British island in the West Indies. Technically, Franklin and Jefferson weren't born in the U.S. either, since they were born in colonial times before there was a U.S. Only Grant was a military leader. Hamilton and Chase were on the currency on the strength of having been Secretaries of the Treasury, Hamilton being the first.
2. Julia Dent, Edith Carow, Lou Henry, Laura Welch, and Betty Bloomer have what in common?

Answer: They all became first ladies of the United States.

Their married names were Julia Grant, Edith Roosevelt (Mrs. Theodore), Lou Hoover, Laura Bush, and Betty Ford.
3. Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Green Bay and Jacksonville. What do they all have in common? They all have teams in . . .

Answer: The National Football League

4. Under what umbrella would all these be hiding from the rain?: Rome, Venice, Troy, Delhi, and Genoa.

Answer: They are all cities or towns in New York State.

Rome is in the historic Mohawk Valley. Venice is near Genoa. Troy is in the eastern end of the state, across the Hudson River from Albany, the capital. Troy is the home of the Emma Willard School, first U.S. secondary school for women. The school was one location for filming of "Scent of a Woman". Delhi, pop. 5000, is in the famed Catskill Mountains. Genoa has 1900 souls and is near the cities of Auburn and Ithaca.
5. William Gargan, Henry Travers, Roland Young, Lee Tracy, and Jaye Davidson are all together in what boat?

Answer: They were all nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

They were nominated as follows: Gargan for "They Knew What They Wanted" (1940); Travers for "Mrs. Miniver" (1942); Young for "Topper" (1937); Tracy for "The Best Man" (1964); Davidson for "The Crying Game" (1992). None of them won. Travers is better known as Clarence the angel in "It's a Wonderful Life".
6. La Gioconda, Balthazar Castiglione, Flying Mercury, the Marquesa de la Solana, and Bathsheba. Hmmm. Wonder what heading they belong under.

Answer: They are all subjects of works of art in the Louvre.

"La Gioconda" (by Leonardo Da Vinci) is also known as "The Mona Lisa". Castiglione's portrait was done by Rafaello Santi, AKA Rafael. Jean Boulogne executed the bronze "Flying Mercury." Goya painted la Marquesa, and "Bathsheba" is a nude by Rembrandt. The Uffizi is in Florence and has a great collection in its own right.
7. Here are some names to chew on: Hilton, Wilding, Todd, Warner, Fisher. How to connect them?

Answer: They were all married to Elizabeth Taylor.

Nicky Hilton was son and heir of hotel king Conrad Hilton. Michael Wilding was a British actor. Mike Todd was an American movie producer ("Around the World in Eighty Days"). John Warner was a senator from Virginia. Eddie Fisher was a popular singer and father of Carrie Fisher by way of Debbie Reynolds. All right, enough of this gossip!
8. Callaghan, Law, Russell, Grey. These names all have something in common. All alike in some way. Gosh, I can't even figure this one out myself!

Answer: They are all prime Ministers of the U.K.

Their dates are James Callaghan 1976-79, Andrew Bonar Law 1922-23, Lord John Russell, 1846-52 and Charles Grey, Earl Grey, 1830-34. And a cup of tea, please, my good woman!
9. Cozy Carlisle, Sean Maguire, Sy Parrish, Armand Goldman, and Adrian Cronauer. Now, these are names to conjure with, but what could they possibly have in common? Politics, sports, entertainment, or . . .?

Answer: They are all characters played by Robin Williams.

Carlisle was in "Dead Again" (1991); Maguire in "Good Will Hunting" (1997); Parrish in "One-Hour Photo" (2002); Goldman in "The Bird Cage" (1996); and Cronauer in "Good Morning, Viet Nam" (1987).
10. Aries, Mercury, Saturn, Taurus. What could be the theme of this group?

Answer: They are or were all makes or models of U.S. automobiles.

The Mercury and the Saturn are both makes of American cars. As of 2003, the Ford Taurus is a model and the Dodge Aries used to be one. Hope you enjoyed my quiz. What do you think of this format? I want to see if I should do more. Thanks. Mickey.
