Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Four planets in our solar system are considered to be terrestrial (that is, "rocky"). Which ones are they?

Answer: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars

There were only two choices with the planet Earth, which is definitely terrestrial. The Mars Rovers showed that the red planet is indeed rocky (some of the mountains there are taller than many on Earth). Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are the four giant gas planets.
2. Four-chambered hearts are most common amongst which group of animals?

Answer: Mammals

Most mammals, being warm-blooded, have hearts with four chambers. Birds (while not being mammals) are also warm-blooded and have the same type of heart. Insects can be said to have a "heart" only in the most rudimentary sense, as they have no red blood cells or a closed circulatory system. Reptiles and amphibians are cold-blooded. They usually have three-chambered hearts. Crocodilians (perhaps because of their evolutionary relationship to birds) are an exception. They have four-chambered hearts, which in some ways are superior to mammalian hearts.
3. "Four score and seven years ago" begins a famous speech made by Abraham Lincoln. What particular event was he referring to?

Answer: American Independence

A "score" of years is defined as twenty, so four score and seven would be 87 years. President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address in 1863 while dedicating a cemetery at Gettysburg, PA following the victory of the Union forces in the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Eighty-seven years before that event would be 1776, the date of the American Revolution, which resulted in the formation of a "united" nation free from British rule.
4. Four Horsemen are foretold to ride in the Apocalypse, which is from what book of the New Testament of The Bible?

Answer: Revelation

The Four Horseman ride four different-coloured horses. Depending on which religious texts you follow, the horses and their riders have different meanings. The White Horse is considered to be either evil (plague/pestilence) or righteous (some people believe this rider is Jesus).

The Red Horse is always evil and either means "war", or perhaps the persecution of Christians. The Black Horseman usually signifies "famine". The Pale Horse (sometimes called the Green Horse) is "death".
5. Four is a common number regarding human teeth. Which one of the following do we normally have more than four of?

Answer: Molars

The norm is to have four of all of them, with the exception of molars. Generally, we have twelve of those (four of which are the wisdom teeth). But speaking of the number "four", the molars consist of four groups of three teeth each, located in the back of the mouth.
6. Four is the number of wings almost every winged insect has. What is one of the exceptions to this rule?

Answer: Flies

All of the answers above are four-winged insects (when they have them - insects are not "born" with wings as they are part of the exoskeleton). Generally annoying insects such as flies, gnats, mosquitoes and some beetles have only two. They belong to the order Diptera (from Greek: di means two, ptera means winged).
7. Four suits are used to play cards. What country did a deck consisting of cups, coins, clubs and swords originate from?

Answer: Italy

French and English decks have hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades as the four suits. A German deck has hearts, bells, acorns and leaves. The Italian deck uses cups, coins, clubs and swords. These are similar to the Tarot deck which can use cups, pentacles, wands and swords. Both the Italian and Tarot decks are closely related to a deck which originates in Mamaluk, Egypt that uses swords, staves, cups and coins.

The deck from Mamaluk, Egypt may be the first one to have been used in Europe.
8. Four river valley civilizations sprouted up and were based around the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, the Indus River, the Nile River and which river in China?

Answer: Yellow

A civilization that was based around the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers is believed to have become a civilization around 5000 BC. The Egyptian civilization which was based around the Nile River began around 3000 BC. The Indus River valley civilization sprouted up in India around 2500 BC. The Yellow River, also known as the Huang He River, civilization in China began around 4000 BC.
9. Four prisoners play a key role in novel "The Sign of Four", which is the second novel to feature this main character.

Answer: Sherlock Holmes

Lemuel Gulliver is from "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift, Phileas Fogg is from Jules Verne's "Around the World in 80 Days" and James Bond, who was created by Ian Fleming, is first seen in the novel "Casino Royale". "The Sign of Four" is based around a deal made between four prisoners and two guards, as well the British East India Company.
10. "Four More Years" is a common chant to be heard when a current U.S. President is campaigning to be re-elected. Which of the first four U.S. Presidents didn't get "Four More Years" and only served one term?

Answer: John Adams

Even though he wasn't affiliated with any party, U.S. Revolutionary War hero George Washington served eight years as President. Thomas Jefferson, the third President, and James Madison, the fourth President, also served for eight years. John Adams only had one term as president, which may have been due to his reluctance to support France in its war against England.
