Question 1 of 10
1. It moves with a lurching gait, each lunging step seemingly out of rhythm with the next. Its skin is the gray of a corpse's cold flesh, and is stretched taught across the face like a poorly fitted mask. Cold, dead eyes glare forth, overshadowing a gaping mouth of broken teeth, each tooth sheathed in tattered meat and dried gore. The creature utters an aching moan from its cracked throat, and raises gnarled fingers in preparation...

Answer: (Think Resident Evil! Six letters.)
Question 2 of 10
2. It floats above the ground, pearly, translucent. Swirling protoplasm characterizes this being as a member of the undead, and its drifting stride categorizes it within the spirit world. Trapped forever in this realm, it utters an inaudible, mournful sigh and slides through the far wall. Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. She moves with an eerie grace, floating barely an inch above the ground. She is a wisp of a female, with a trailing veil concealing her face. She hovers in the far corner, just beyond the dead child's corpse. Rising from her lips is a terrible wail, one of dreadful grief and pain, that keens in harmony to the lamentations of the dead.

Answer: (An Irish scream--Seven letters.)
Question 4 of 10
4. Standing alone in the shadows, he is the pale white of exposed bone. No flesh or skin sheaths the jointed limbs, with long, slender and wickedly sharp fingers. Upon the interlaced ribs rests a glaring skull devoid of eyes, and in its right hand is a longsword of interlocked bones.

Answer: (You might find this if you go digging around a graveyard. Eight letters.)
Question 5 of 10
5. The tomb is old, covered in the dust of ages. Slowly, in the central chamber, beyond the vision of the world, a sarcophagus lid rises. From the depths of the grave appears a broad, snarling figure with taught, stretched flesh. Upon its chest rests a glimmering amulet that pulses with contained power and rage.

Answer: (There was a Brendan Fraser movie with this name. Five letters.)
Question 6 of 10
6. He appears a normal man, but his flesh is cold and moist, and he stalks the night with faintly glowing eyes of crimson. However, that which gives him his title are the long, serrated fangs that gleam within a reddened mouth.

Answer: (Seven letters - not a specific name)
Question 7 of 10
7. The ravenous spirit descends upon the grave, seeking the flesh beneath the soil. Manifested as a grotesquely deformed human, he digs at the dirt with clawed fingers until the corpse beneath is revealed for his consumption. Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. "After a moment something about the size of a small horse hopped out into the grey twilight, and Carter turned sick at the aspect of that scabrous and unwholesome beast, whose face is so curiously human despite the absence of a nose, a forehead, and other important particulars." - Lovecraft's "The Dreamlands" Hint

Question 9 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: zombie

The zombie is one of the most iconic undead creatures to inhabit the entertainment industry. Either given undeath through science, magical resurrection, or infection, zombies are characteristically seen in mass groups, a swarm of the undead to terrorize the unfortunate mortals.
2. It floats above the ground, pearly, translucent. Swirling protoplasm characterizes this being as a member of the undead, and its drifting stride categorizes it within the spirit world. Trapped forever in this realm, it utters an inaudible, mournful sigh and slides through the far wall.

Answer: Ghost

Along with the zombie, the ghost is also one of the most recognized undead creatures to haunt fiction. It is impossible to define when the belief in spirits that remained after the body's death came into being, but the belief predates written records. Whether ghosts are malevolent or not depends upon their depiction in the particular tale, and they have served both the forces of light and dark.

Answer: banshee

The Banshee spirit of Irish mythology is said to appear when a death is about to, or has occurred. They are always female, and are characterized by their keening, wailing scream, also known as the Banshee Scream. In modern times, this spirit, originally mostly benevolent, has been given a sinister name, and their scream is said to induce sudden paralysis and death.

Answer: skeleton

The skeleton is, perhaps, a less prominent member of the undead community. The skeleton was believed in more ancient times to rise from graves, devoid of the flesh if a burial was performed incorrectly and the head was not buried separately from the body.

In modern media, especially in games, the skeleton is usually a minor being, functioning as shock troops and the like, rather than intelligent apparitions.

Answer: mummy

If you missed this one, then you missed a carefully laid clue. In Egypt, especially ancient Egypt, the deceased were often mummified and bound in bandages. Viewed as permanently dead and sacred by the Egyptians, the mummy's purpose was distorted in the twentieth century.

The mummy became a specter of destruction, bound all in bloody bandages and characterized by a gleaming amulet from which the mummy draws its power.
6. He appears a normal man, but his flesh is cold and moist, and he stalks the night with faintly glowing eyes of crimson. However, that which gives him his title are the long, serrated fangs that gleam within a reddened mouth.

Answer: vampire

I chose to describe the vampire as a human, with minimal additions that have been applied to the vampire in modern films and books. Originally, the vampire was believed to be a malevolent spirit that rose from the underworld and possessed a mortal to drink the blood of men.

In modern times, however, the vampire has gained much more in the way of definition, from the ability to transform into bats, wolves and mist, to enhanced physical abilities and black magic.
7. The ravenous spirit descends upon the grave, seeking the flesh beneath the soil. Manifested as a grotesquely deformed human, he digs at the dirt with clawed fingers until the corpse beneath is revealed for his consumption.

Answer: Ghoul

The ghoul is an often overlooked creature, however, it often haunts the legends of old. Viewed as a risen spirit who haunted cemeteries and graveyards, the ghoul was said to devour the mortal remains that have been buried.

The other choices are of course incorrect, as ghosts are always incorporeal and incapable of physical action. A specter is another name for the ghost, and a skeleton is, of course, not a spirit.
8. "After a moment something about the size of a small horse hopped out into the grey twilight, and Carter turned sick at the aspect of that scabrous and unwholesome beast, whose face is so curiously human despite the absence of a nose, a forehead, and other important particulars." - Lovecraft's "The Dreamlands"

Answer: Ghast

Actually, in Lovecraft's "The Dreamlands," the ghasts are denizens of the underworld. Slightly larger than a man, they move on hooves, and are pack hunters. However, more recently, the ghast is the name of a being in the D&D world, and are a stronger version of the ghoul. They are seen as muscular creatures that serve as shock troops or generals in the undead army.

The demon is not undead, and the wraith is purely spectral, so it can't be either of those. The Graveland Horror is a beast I made up purely for this question...
9. He was once a feared mage, but he is now caught between life and death. Having preserved his life force, he controls the magic of death and necromancy, and is, in essence, immortal.

Answer: Lich

In the D&D world, the lichnee are the generals and the lords of the undead. They are previously mages, that made the greatest sacrifice of death, and preserved themselves in order to achieve immortality and power. Only those who are truly devoted to the black art of necromancy embrace this path, but they are the lords of the undead.

The most powerful of the lichs are known as the dracolichs, dragons who turned undead for eternal power.
10. In the vast majority of traditions, are the undead immortal?

Answer: Yes

The undead are immortal unless slain with a will. Being absent of life, but not confined to the grave, they don't suffer from the weaknesses of either. Only direct, physical or magical powers will destroy them.
