Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following is the lie about Canada?

Answer: Canada has eleven provinces and three territories.

Canada has ten provinces and three territories. The third territory was created in 1999 when the existing Northwest Territories was divided into two. Despite its name, the Northwest Territories is actually one territory in Canada. Provinces include Newfoundland & Labrador (one province), Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. Territories include Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut.

The eastern provinces were formed before the western provinces, and the national capital is Ottawa, Ontario.
2. Which of the following statement about pets is the lie?

Answer: American Bobtail are dogs.

The American bobtail cat was developed in the 1960s. Its tail is typically less than half the length of a typical cat's tail. The shortened tail led to the name of this pet. All other options in this question are unusual dog breeds around the world.
3. Which of the following statements is a lie about bison in North America?

Answer: A free range herd wanders in Alabama.

There are no wild herds of bison in Alabama. There is a stable herd that wanders between Mexico and New Mexico. Several herds call Yukon home. There is also a free range herd in the Henry Mountains in Utah along with a semi-free range herd on Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake, Utah.
4. What is the lie about paper?

Answer: Paper is typically made with recycled aluminum.

Aluminum is not a product that is typically used to make paper. Paper requires that plant fibers are mixed with a liquid and pressed thin before being allowed to dry. Elephant dung can be used because of the plant fibers in it. Recycled clothing can be used if it are made from cotton or linen. Those plant fibers are broken down and re-constituted as paper.
5. What is the lie about used vehicle tires?

Answer: Tire fires do not pose a risk to humans or to the environment.

The smoke from tire fires contains toxic chemicals such as cyanide and sulfur dioxide among others. Large tire fires typically result in evacuations. The number of tires in stockpiles in the US dropped from an estimated one billion in 1990 to only 67 million in 2015.

This is thought to be due to tire recycling programs where used tires are made into construction material, furniture, shoe soles, carpet padding, garden bedding to keep weeds down, patio decks, etc.
6. Which is the lie about phobias?

Answer: Uranophobia is the fear of planets.

Uranophobia is actually the fear of heaven. All other phobias listed are actual fears.
7. Which of the following statements about the Rogers Centre sports centre in Toronto is the lie?

Answer: It floats on Lake Ontario.

The Skydome was officially opened in 1989. It is located on firm land in downtown Toronto, and was re-named the Rogers Centre in 2005 after the company that purchased the stadium. Its seating capacity is more than 45,000.
8. What is the lie about chocolate chip cookies?

Answer: They always contain a pinch of cinnamon.

The chocolate chip cookie was invented by a woman in the US who added cut-up bits of chocolate from a Nestle semi-sweet chocolate bar to a cookie recipe in the late 1930s. They became very popular during the war when soldiers received care packages from home and shared the goodies with friends.

Many variations now exist (e.g., the "chocolate chocolate chip cookie", the "M&M's cookie", the "butterscotch chip cookie", etc.). There is no consistent use of cinnamon in any of these recipes since the flavour would likely conflict with the sweet bits in the cookies.
9. Which of these statements is the lie about Major League Baseball in North America?

Answer: Batters can use aluminum bats.

Bats in the Major Leagues are made of wood. All players and coaches who are on the field when a team is "up to bat" must wear helmets for their own safety. Umpires can be found at each base, plus home plate during the regular season. Additional umpires are added during the playoffs.
10. What is the lie about wine?

Answer: Wine has far fewer calories than grape juice.

Actually, wine and grape juice have about the same amount of calories. The other bits of trivia are all true about wine - there are lots of bubbles in champagne, many white wines are made from red grapes, and wine gets lighter or darker depending on the type of the wine.
