Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From Cornwall come reports of sightings of a large black cat. This is referred to as "The Beast of. . ." where?

Answer: Bodmin

The Beast of Bodmin is a large black cat like creature which is supposed to be living wild on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. There have been regular sightings of it over many years, with most reports saying it resembles a panther. Local farmers blame it for various instances of sheep being found dead from an obvious animal attack. Over the years there have been photographs taken, but none of these have been sharp enough or close enough to give conclusive proof.
2. There have been reports of a large cat roaming the Cambridgeshire area from the 1950s through to the present time. What is it popularly known as?

Answer: The Fen Tiger

There have been reports of sightings of a large fawn coloured striped cat, known as The Fen Tiger since the 1950s. It seems to move over quite large areas, with sightings being anything up to 30 miles apart. There were 34 reported sightings of a large cat in the Cambridgeshire area in 2004, and this is one rumour that the British Big Cat Society believes to be true.
3. The Beast of Exmoor is alleged to be a cougar or black leopard. What did the Government do in 1988 after a spate of animal related sheep killings on Exmoor?

Answer: Sent in the Royal Marines

After one farmer reported losing 100 sheep over a three month period, all with their throats ripped out, the Government took the unusual step of sending in the Royal Marines to look for The Beast of Exmoor. Nothing was found. Sightings of the creature started in the 1970s and local people believe it is a cougar or leopard released into the wild after the keeping of such animals as pets was made illegal.
4. One big cat sighting that turned out to be true was Felicity who was captured on a farm near Inverness in 1980. What sort of cat was Felicity?

Answer: Puma

The case of Felicity gives credence to the theory that many big cat sightings are of pet animals released into the wild after the keeping of dangerous animals as pets became illegal. When she was captured she was clearly domesticated and experts felt she had not been in the wild for any more than a few weeks.
5. In 1995 holidaymakers in which British county were warned to dial 999 if they saw a big "cat like" creature?

Answer: Dorset

Dorset Police issued the warning after numerous big cat reports, including one of a puma walking down a main road in Bournemouth town centre. A policewoman from Poole reported hearing growling noises and roaring when out walking her dog on a local heath, and a holidaymaker reported seeing a lynx in the grounds of his hotel.
6. In late 1998 there was panic in Wrangaton, Devon after several sightings of which type of big cat?

Answer: Lion

After the first sightings were reported a large paw print was found close to Wrangaton golf club, and this was confirmed as coming from a large cat, possibly a juvenile male lion. Some three weeks after this, two boys camping on Dartmoor reported being disturbed by a pair of large cats trying to claw their way into their tent.

There has been anecdotal evidence of large cats living wild on Dartmoor stretching over some 20 years.
7. In which British county was a Eurasian lynx killed in 1991?

Answer: Norfolk

This story was not reported until 2003, and for some time was regarded as a hoax, but in March 2006 a police report confirmed that a Eurasian lynx had indeed been killed in the area in 1991. It was believed to have escaped from an establishment in the area that bred wild animals, including lynxes.
8. Sheppey, in Kent, has reported sightings of big cats going back to the 1970s. What gives some credence to these reports?

Answer: A local hotelier kept a pet lion

In the 1970s, a local hotel owner not only had a pet lion that he used to parade around the grounds, but a puma as well. It is widely believed that when the keeping of such animals as pets was made illegal they were released into the wild.
9. Big cat sightings were confined to mainly rural areas, but there has been an increase in reports of big cats in urban areas. In which East Sussex town was a black leopard seen in 1993?

Answer: All of these

Over a three week period numerous sightings of a black leopard were reported in all of these towns with the most reliable coming from a milkman in Portslade, who saw the cat loping down the road in front of him at 3.30am. Sightings were also reported in Burgess Hill, East Chiltington and Henfield.

These cats can cover large areas, so it seems likely that these sightings were all of the same creature.
10. In 2001 a European lynx was captured in a back garden in which London suburb?

Answer: Cricklewood

The female lynx, which was injured, was spotted in a back garden in May 2001. She was captured and taken to London Zoo. She was almost certainly an escaped or released pet. Under UK law, the legal owner of a big cat does not have to inform anyone if it escapes, neither do they have to inform any authority if they breed in captivity.
