Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1993 saw the beginning of the trading card game genre when which game, designed by Richard Garfield, a math PhD, hit the shelves?

Answer: Magic: the Gathering

"Magic: the Gathering" is the grandfather of all trading card games and still a strong brand going into its 26th year. Players buy packs containing collectible cards of various rarities, then pick at least 60 of them to make a custom deck from which to play. Cards represent magic spells that summon creatures or have various effects plus items (artifacts, vehicles and equipment) and lands whose mana powers all those spells. The game has over 15,000 different cards and each year adds at least another four sets.

The other games have also been in the genre for many years and have high sales, but they weren't the first.

2. What is the name of the treat found at Dairy Queen that comes in a flavor of the month?

Answer: Blizzard

First introduced in 1985, Dairy Queen Blizzards are a mixture of their soft-serve with a variety of toppings; the choice of toppings is virtually endless and can include favorites, such as cookie dough, strawberries, and chocolate syrup. It is possible, however, to also find name brand toppings, such as Reese's, Heath Bar, or Oreo cookies. Each month the restaurant features a particular flavor of Blizzards. They are served so cold that they can be turned upside down without spilling out.

3. On the game show "The Price is Right" what is the name of the game where the contestants spin the big wheel: the ______ Showdown?

Answer: Showcase

During the Showcase Showdown, three contestants each get two spins of the giant wheel to get as close to a dollar as possible without going over. The contestant closest to the dollar wins the round and advances to see the showcases. If a contest spins exactly one dollar in either one or two spins, he or she wins one thousand dollars and will get a bonus spin to possibly win more money.

4. Which actor would you associate with both an elven archer from an epic movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson and an apprentice blacksmith turned adventurer in a seafaring movie series whose first three installments were directed by Gore Verbinsky?

Answer: Orlando Bloom

In the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, Orlando Bloom stars as Legolas Greenleaf, son of Thranduil, the King of Northern Mirkwood. In the movies, he appears both as an able tracker and a sharpshooter archer who isn't seen missing his mark even once in the trilogy.

As Will Smith in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, he is merely a blacksmith's son and apprentice who, out of love for Elizabeth, the daughter of Port Royal's governor, is drawn into the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow and later becomes the captain of the infamous ghost ship "Flying Dutchman".

5. What is a name for an apartment in which the kitchen, living room and bedroom are all located in one small area?

Answer: Studio

A studio apartment, also called a bachelor apartment, is typically an economically-friendly and small apartment setup where several rooms are combined into one. This is why studio apartments are also called one-room apartments. The bathroom is typically in its own, much smaller room.

6. A sponge is an aquatic lifeform classified as which of the following?

Answer: Animal

Porifera is the scientific name of the phylum that consists of at least five thousand different species of sponges. Sponges are among the most primitive multicellular animals, lacking discernible organs, a fixed body shape or symmetry. In spite of seemingly being without structure, sponges have various well-differentiated cell types including an immune system and a reproductive system with male and female gametes. Unlike most animals, they lack a discernible digestive tract; the entire body of a sponge can absorb and process nutrients filtered from the water.

7. During World War II, the Hawker aircraft company produced a fighter-bomber with what meteorological name?

Answer: Typhoon

Variants on the Hawker Typhoon (nicknamed Tiffy by troops) included the Tornado, the Tempest and the Sea Fury. It was produced between 1940 and 1945, and originally planned to replace the earlier Hurricane, but its role actually developed into interception of German planes that entered British airspace at low levels. It was also used as a long-range fighter, because it was armed with extremely efficient weapons for air-ground attacks.

8. With what type of music would one be most likely to associate Kenny G?

Answer: Contemporary

More specifically, Kenny G is known as a performer of Smooth Jazz, as opposed to the more vibrant Fusion Jazz which is also classed as Contemporary jazz. He plays saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor) and flute, and achieved his first commercial success with his 1986 album, 'Duotones'.

9. What annual sporting event, a showdown between the National and American Leagues in baseball, is also called the "Midsummer Classic"?

Answer: All-Star Game

The All-Star Game is typically held in July at what is considered to be the midpoint of the Major League Baseball season. It has been held since 1933, and has been an annual event with the exception of 1945. Players were chosen for the game's roster that year, but travel was restricted due to WWII.

10. And now for receiving your ticket: Find the common bond hinted at by the nine previous answers - and then pack appropriately for what is hopefully a dream vacation. Where will you be heading?

Answer: Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World consists of four theme parks - the Magic (1) Kingdom, EPCOT (consisting of Future World and World Showcase (3), Disney's Hollywood Studios (5) and the Animal (6) Kingdom - plus two water parks: Blizzard (2) Beach and Typhoon (7) Lagoon. It's located in the Orlando (4) vacation area and features an extensive lineup of hotels, of which the All-Star (9) resorts, themed for music, movies and sports are among the largest and the most affordable while the Contemporary (8) resort is an upscale one that connects directly to the parks via the monorail system.
