Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When an asteroid is expected to hit the earth and destroy all life, people react with coping mechanisms including drugs, alcohol, rampant sex, and suicide. What 2012 film, starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley, depicts this?

Answer: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Dodge (Steve Carell) copes by maintaining his routine at his job at an insurance company where no one is buying and none will collect. He finds himself in the midst of a world gone berserk. He tries suicide himself using a combination of codeine-laced cough syrup and window cleaner but this is unsuccessful. He finds an abandoned dog with a sign around his neck that says 'Sorry'. A neighbor, Penny, (Keira Knightley) bonds with him and they try to escape the mayhem on the streets and end up pledging their love before the screen goes black.

The film lost money at the box office and had mixed reviews with a 55% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Many found the grimness of the story jarring with the attempted humor.
2. The Rapture is a controversial concept in some Christian denominations relating to an amended Apocalypse based in part on the letters of Paul in "First Epistle to the Thessalonians". Which of these is NOT a promise to Christians?

Answer: Those remaining Christains will have a second chance at Rapture

Paul's "First Epistle to the Thessalonians" (NIV) states in part:

"... we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord will ...not precede those who have fallen asleep... Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command...the voice of the archangel, and ...trumpet call, and the dead in Christ will rise first... we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And... we will be with the Lord forever."

Additional biblical references are Second Thessalonians, Gospel of Matthew, First Corinthians, and the Revelation.
3. Charles Manson had a vision of a race war that would be the end of life as we know it. The name of the non-fiction book by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry about the Manson affair is "Helter Skelter" based on the Beatles' recording. On what Beatles' album would you find "Helter Skelter"?

Answer: The White Album

Manson was to claim that the concept of a deadly race war was his vision of the Apocalypse. He felt he must act as "The White Album" in the context of its songs shared a similar view. He conceived he could start this final phase by committing senseless murders which would spark the conflict. To this end he used his "family"--a group of young men and women who came his control through his charismatic leadership--to do the actual crimes.
4. This religious group believe that Armageddon is imminent and that the establishment of God's kingdom over the earth is the solution for all problems faced by humanity. They may knock on your door and ask you to donate to their cause and publications. By what name is this sect known?

Answer: Jehovah's Witnesses

The Watchtower founder, Charles Taze Russell, predicted the end of times with specific years and months. When nothing happened, they engaged in "spin control" to explain. One was that it was a "spiritual Armageddon". Other predictions of "Judgement Day" came and went and new converts were made unaware of previous predictions.
5. Televangelist Pat Robertson frequently makes predictions based on his interpretation of Biblical prophecy. At least five times he predicted the Apocalypse of the earth, that did not happen. Which of these predictions did come true?

Answer: 1988-God told him to run for President

Robertson said that God would destroy Orlando for its support of the gay community.

There was no economic collapse in 2013 nor was there a surge of Muslims to convert.

However, Robertson did heed God's message in 1988 and ran in the Republican primaries. He received well over a million votes that amounted to 9% of the votes cast against front-runners George Bush and Bob Dole.

In his apocalyptic predictions, the theme of huge tsunamis and meteor devastation seem to predominate.
6. During the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction era, dinosaurs vanished from the earth. Since then, many theories have tried to explain the phenomenon. An early theory is that small animals feasted on dinosaur eggs so the population dropped. Later scientists while studying dinosaur bones found traces of iridium, an element found mostly in meteors from outer space. The next was to link dinosaurs to this material. Scientists postulated that a huge meteor or comet struck the earth causing climate change and the debris blotted out the sun for years. Dinosaurs had no coping mechanism to deal with these radical changes. How many years ago did this happen according to scientists?

Answer: 66,038,000 years ago

The correct number is 11,000 years either way according to 2017 estimates.

Some religious groups highlight creationism and accept only dates in or inferred in the Bible. Therefore, it is claimed that the age of the earth is 6000 to 10,000 years and that man and dinosaurs could have co-existed. They also point out that none of the theories have undebatable proof.

It is believed that birds are descendants of the dinosaurs and that 70% of all animated life died with the dinosaurs.
7. Which of these mystics predicted that the world would end in 2013, according to documents released in 2013?

Answer: Rasputin

In documents released by the Soviet Union, Rasputin wrote "A million souls ...perish in a single battle called "the great slaughter". It would be the greatest carnage ever recorded in history. World would end on 23 August 2013 when a fire shall devour all living things, then, the planet would face a graving silence."

Edgar Cayce predicted "the 'Battle of Armageddon' described ... in the Bible would begin in 1999. This 'battle' will not be a war fought on Earth but spiritual struggle between the 'higher forces of light' and 'lower forces of darkness' for 1000 years of Earth time. The reason for this struggle is to prevent souls from lower afterlife realms from reincarnating to Earth".

Nostradamus predicted that at time of writing 177 years 3 months 11 days-- "plague, long famine and wars, and still more floods... humanity shall several times be so severely diminished."

Cotton Mather, a Puritan minister, predicted that the world would end in 1697. When it did not, he made the prediction at least two more times.
8. What politician in 2006 said "unless we took 'drastic measures' to reduce greenhouse gasses, the world would reach a 'point of no return' in ... ten years?

Answer: Al Gore

Gore's tendency to hyperbolize may be effective in communicating ideas but could backfire if taken literally out of context. It was a call to action more than a prediction of apocalypse.
9. Fred Astaire doesn't dance in this 1959 post-apocalyptic drama of a post-nuclear war era. Instead he dies of carbon monoxide poisoning as a suicide in his beloved sports car. What is the name of this film that also starred Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, and Anthony Perkins?

Answer: On the Beach

"On the Beach" was nominated for two Academy Awards for musical score and film editing but remains a difficult film to watch for many. We see mothers given instructions to euthanize their children and themselves rather than die from radiation sickness.

A sailor from a submarine takes leave to find his parents and finds them dead at home in bed, as most people just went home. The radiation hovers over the northern hemisphere but is drifting south to Australia where much of the plot takes place. Stanley Kramer directed and Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 75% freshness rating.
10. Scientists, based on evidence, history, and observation, have proposed several apocalyptic events in the future. Which of these find little support in the scientific academic community?

Answer: Alien beings will wreck havoc on the earth

Scientists Nick Bastrop and Stephen A. Nelson concur that a meteor, the size of the one that brought an end to the Age of Dinosaurs, will strike the earth between 500,000 and one million years from now.

The Geological Society says there is a good possibility of a supervolcanic eruption, much like the TOba supereruption of 75,000 years ago. It could involve as much as 3,200 km3 of magma.

James Kasting suggests that the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will drop dramatically, making Earth uninhabitable in 500,000 million years but S. Franck, C. Bounama, W. Von Bloh set that event in 1.3 billion years.

There may be a few but most scientists do not subscribe to alien or divine deity theories.
