The three great Siberian rivers emptying into the Arctic Ocean are the Ob, Yenisei, and Lena in order from westernmost to easternmost. The Yenisei joins the Angara and Selenge rivers to become Russia's longest and the world's fifth longest river system, which passes through Lake Baikal. This is the oldest and deepest lake in the world at 30 million years old.

The city of Arkhangelsk is connected to Moscow by the Severnaya (Northern) Railway, completed in 1897. The oblast is home to the Plesetsk Cosmodrome, one of Russia's three spaceports. A spokesperson for the Russian Space Forces has talked of Russia's pledge to spend over five billion rubles on its expansion.

Rostov-on-Don features the River Don in its name so as not to be confused with the town Rostov. Rostov-on-Don is part of Rostov Oblast, which shares a border with Ukraine.

Novosibirsk, in Siberia, is the third largest city in Russia and it is indeed located on the Ob River. Smolensk, on the Dnieper, is in Smolensk Oblast, between Moscow Oblast and Belarus. Volgograd is situated on the Volga, Europe's longest river. None of these three rivers touch the Sea of Azov.

The Ob's estuary is the approximately 1,000 km (600 mi) long Gulf of Ob, situated between the Gydan and Yamal peninsulas. The Ob is dammed near the city of Novosibirsk to create the massive Novosibirsk Reservoir, informally referred to as the Ob Sea.

The much smaller Orlovka River is linked to the Ob through its tributary, the Ket River.

Sakhalin is Russia's largest island, close in area to the island Hispaniola, shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. It is entirely within Sakhalin Oblast. The Strait of Tartary separates Sakhalin from mainland Russia as well as being one of two meeting points of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan.

Severny Island, Russia's second largest island, comprises the north part of Novaya Zemlya, or "New Land", an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean which is considered the easternmost point in Europe. Spitsbergen is part of Svalbard, while Sumatra is in Indonesia.

The Amur, when combined with its tributary the Argun River, is the third longest river located completely or partially within Russia and the tenth longest in the world. It shares its name with the Amur Oblast in which it is partially found.

The Aldan is a tributary of the Lena River, while the Dnieper is in Eastern Europe. The Irtysh is a tributary of the Ob River.

Vladivostok is the largest city in the Russian Far East. Its location had previously been owned by several Chinese dynasties until being acquired by Russia by the 1860 Treaty of Beijing.

The Trans-Siberian Railway, the world's longest railway, links Vladivostok with Moscow, a journey which spans 9,289 km and takes six days of travel.

The Lena's delta spans about 400 km (250 mi) in width. There is an island, one of many, in its delta which is named after Cuba, "Ostrov Kuba-Aryta". Lenin, born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, took the name by which he would be known in history from the river.

On September 7, 2011, the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash near the city of Yaroslavl took the lives of 43 players and coaching staff of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl ice hockey team. One more died five days later. The tragedy garnered a massive reaction which spanned not only the world of sports, but airline safety as well, and brought people together on an international scale in memoriam.

The Salavat Yulaev Ufa-Atlant Moscow Oblast game, which had been in progress, was postponed and later suspended once news of the tragedy reached officials. Its teams left for a nearby church after the audience was dismissed following a minute of silence. The next day, the arena which was to be the site of the victims' next game instead became the site of a requiem mass to honor them.

The city of Yaroslavl announced a period of mourning following the crash for the three days of Friday the 9th to Sunday the 11th of September. Sports teams in countries like the United States and Germany made efforts to pay their tributes to victims which had once played alongside them by retiring a number or adding honorary patches to their uniforms.
