Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Coffs Harbour, on the New South Wales coast, is particularly well known for its 'Big ...' what?

Answer: Banana

The 'Big Banana' is possibly one of the best known BIG things in Australia. It measures eleven metres long and five metres high. You could make a fair few milkshakes out of that.
2. Located in Emerald, Queensland is 'The Big Easel'. What famous painting, by Vincent Van Gogh, is depicted on the easel?

Answer: 'Sunflowers'

The 'Big Easel' is a world wide project and the organisers plan to have seven 'Big Easel's' around the world at the completion of the project. The first one finished was in Altona, Manitoba, Canada in 1998 with the Australian one being unveiled in 1999.
3. 'The Big Potato' is located at which New South Wales town?

Answer: Robertson

Unfortunately, the featureless 'Big Potato' also resembles a lump of excrement and is locally called 'The Big Turd'. Coincidently, the public toilets of nearby 'Potato World' are contained within. Perhaps the designer of this BIG thing thought it was a good idea at the time.
4. Bass, in Victoria, has a BIG thing to celebrate which unique local inhabitants?

Answer: Worms

The unique giant worms of this area grow to three metres long and just three centimetres thick. The 'Big Worm' is a concrete structure 100 metres long that houses a museum and gift shop. I believe the gift shop wares are as tacky as they sound.
5. The South Australian town of Kimba has which native bird as its BIG thing?

Answer: Galah

Kimba also lays claim that it is half way between the east and west coasts of Australia and the 'Big Galah' stands outside the gift shop called, imaginatively, 'Half Way Across Australia'. The Galah is said to be a bit on the skinny side, which can lead you to ask how far away is the 'Big Bird Feeder'?
6. Tamworth, famous for its Country Music Festival, is home to which BIG thing?

Answer: Golden Guitar

The Golden Guitar is the name of the awards given out each year at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. The 'Big Golden Guitar' stands 12 metres high and was unveiled in 1988 by Slim Dusty who, at the time, had won more Golden Guitar awards than any one else. Narrandera, in New South Wales also has a 'Big Guitar' but is only 5.8 metres long, but to its credit is the fact that it can be played ... if you have two metre long hands. {;-)}
7. Which of the following towns can boast having a 'Big Crocodile'?

Answer: All of them

Although the Normanton crocodile is only a life size model, at 28 feet it is still big! Wyndham's croc is a truly BIG thing standing at 3 metres high and 18 metres long. The Humpty Doo croc stands on its hind legs and is wearing boxing gloves. Your guess is as good as mine, but perhaps this is where you can start singing 'Never Smile at a Crocodile'?
8. Which Victorian town is home to the 'Big Cigar'?

Answer: Churchill

Well, it would have to be Churchill wouldn't it? This town was named after Winston Churchill who was known for his penchant for cigars. It's a pity the town didn't celebrate its name-sake for one of his other idiosyncrasies, the V for Victory sign, that could have been really interesting. {;-)}
9. Which Queensland town has a 'Big Pineapple'?

Answer: Woombye

The Big Pineapple was opened in 1971 to showcase the pineapple industry of the area. There is also a nut mobile which travels around the property and it provides a lot of interesting information about the macadamia industry.
10. Quite possibly the tackiest of all BIG things is the 'Big Oyster' located just north of which coastal New South Wales town?

Answer: Taree

Taree is the lucky town to have this BIG thing ... the 'Big Oyster' sits atop a seafood restaurant and you can walk up into the oyster and get a panoramic view of the coast ... and the road. The same people that built the 'Big Oyster' also built the 'Big Prawn' at Ballina. Sad, really, isn't it? (update ... it appears that the Big Oyster is now the office for a car dealership!)
