Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bryce Canyon National Park is not really a canyon.

Answer: True

The "canyon" is formed by a process of freezing and thawing, rather than as the result of a river. This process is called "ice wedging".
2. In Zion National Park, how many Emerald Pools are there?

Answer: 3

There are three pools, each of which has a different hike to it. They got their name because of their green color, which is caused by algae.
3. Which of the following is not a hike at Zion National Park?

Answer: Queen's Garden Trail

This hike, at Bryce Canyon National Park, is an exploration of the hoodoos, and ends with a hoodoo called "Queen Victoria", which is how it got its name.
4. In which state are Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park located?

Answer: Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park are both located in Utah, and are about a one hour drive from each other. During this drive, the scenery changes dramatically.
5. Which of the following completes this famous quote about Bryce Canyon National Park . "It's one heck of a place to..."?

Answer: "lose a cow"

This quote is written on a sign at Bryce Point. Even though it did not say "watch the sun set", many people enjoy watching the sun go down.
6. Which of the following is not located in Bryce Canyon National Park?

Answer: The Narrows

The Narrows is an area upriver from "Riverside Walk" in Zion National Park. It is a difficult hike involving walking through a river. All of the other choices are names of hoodoos.
7. What best describes a hoodoo?

Answer: A column of rock

Bryce Canyon National Park's claim to fame is its hoodoos. They are formed by ice wedging, and look like tall pillars. Some of these look like people or animals, and so have names like "The Hunter".
8. In which year did Bryce Canyon National Park become a national park?

Answer: 1928

Bryce was named after Ebenezer Bryce, who discovered the canyon. Bryce Canyon National Monument was established in 1923. It became a National Park in 1928.
9. Which of the following is not in Zion National Park?

Answer: Navajo Trail

Navajo Trail is located in Bryce Canyon National Park , not Zion National Park. It is actually a continuation of the "Queen's Garden Trail." This hike goes through hoodoos, and has many more spectacular hoodoos then the other trails.
10. Which hike in Zion is so steep that at the last part, hikers must use a chain to hoist themselves up?

Answer: Angel's Landing

Emerald Pools Trail and Riverside Walk both have paved paths, and "The Narrows" is only difficult because it is long and upstream through a cold river. At the top of Angel's landing, there is a trail a few feet wide, with cliffs on both sides, and hikers must hoist themselves up with a chain.
