Philadelphia was the capital 1790-1800. New York was (briefly) the capital prior to this. Washington is, of course, named after the first president of the US, George Washington.

Belize City, the former capital was almost destroyed in a hurricane in 1961. Belmopan was built in response and became the capital in 1970.

The capital of British India was moved to New Delhi (built next to the existing city of Delhi) from Calcutta in 1911. It remained the capital following independence in 1947.

The city has gone through a number of name changes since it was built in 1824 as a Tsarist fort. Until 1961 it was Akmolinsk when it became Tselinograd. It was renamed Aqmola in 1991 and in 1997, when it became the capital, it was given the name Astana as it was a word easily pronounced in many of the languages of the country.

At the time Sweden controlled modern-day Finland, Estonia and Latvia. Russia wrested control of much of the area from Sweden during the Great Northern War (1700-21). St Petersburg was built on the conquered land and was the Russian capital from 1704 until 1918.
