Answer: Hanoi

Whilst not the largest city in Vietnam, Hanoi is the capital, located in north Vietnam. Hanoi was the capital under French colonisation, and was occupied by Japanese forces during WW2; after that it was proclaimed the capital of North Vietnam by Ho Chi Minh. After the end of the Vietnam War in 1976 and the unification of north and south, Hanoi became the official capital of Vietnam.

Answer: Vientiane

Vientiane is located on the Mekong River and is the largest city in Laos. Founded in the 16th century, though razed to the ground in early 19th century by the Siamese, it gained a rebirth in the late 19th century when it became a French protectorate.

The French rebuilt most of Vientiane and ruled there until the Japanese occupation in WW2. After WW2 the French regained control until finally, Laos got its independence in 1954.
