Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the seven Central American countries (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama) is largest in area?

Answer: Nicaragua

At just over 130 000 square kilometers, Nicaragua is the Central American country with the greatest area. Guatemala is the second largest of the seven countries (nearly 109 000 sq km). Costa Rica's area is just over 50 000 sq km.

Of Nicaragua's total area, just over 10 000 sq km is water.
2. Which Central American country was formerly known as British Honduras?

Answer: Belize

British Honduras was originally a territory under the administration of the United Kingdom, from 1862 to 1964. After 1964, British Honduras was self-governing, and the name of the country changed to Belize in 1973. It is believed that the name Belize came from a Mayan term for "muddy waters", in reference to the Belize River.
3. Which country is home to at least 30 volcanoes, including Central America's highest elevation at Volcán Tajumulco?

Answer: Guatemala

Panama and Honduras each have a few volcanoes, and El Salvador has nearly two dozen, but it is Guatemala that has at least 30 volcanoes, including Volcán Tajumulco, which contains Central America's highest elevation at 4 202 meters (13 786 feet). Tajumulco has two summits, and one includes a crater more than 50 meters wide.

The chain of volcanoes stretching along the Pacific coast of Central America is called the Central American Volcanic Arc (CAVA).
4. The largest lake in Central America shares its name with the country in which it is located. Which country and lake is this?

Answer: Nicaragua

At 8 264 sq km, Lake Nicaragua is, by far, the largest lake in Central America. It is nearly eight times the size of Nicaragua's second largest lake, Lake Managua. Lake Nicaragua has fascinating fish in its waters, such as the sawfish and bull shark (a species known to swim in freshwater regions elsewhere).
5. The southernmost point on mainland Central America, Punta Mariato, is a cape in which canalized country?

Answer: Panama

Punta Mariato is a cape in the western half of Panama. It is mainland North America's southernmost point, just more than seven degrees north of the Equator. Punta Mariato is uninhabited and part of a large nature reserve.
6. Which Central American country is an outlier in that it has English as its official language rather than Spanish?

Answer: Belize

Spanish and Kriol (a Belizean creole patois) are widely spoken in Belize, but, since Belize was a British colony, English is the official language of the country. The six remaining countries in Central America all have Spanish as an official language.
7. The lowest point of inland Central America is found at the Isthmus of Rivas in which relatively large country?

Answer: Nicaragua

The Isthmus of Rivas/Nicaragua Canal is located on the Continental Divide of the Americas. The elevation at this point is 56 m.
8. Three of the four following cities are the capital of their respective countries. Which city, the most populous in its country, is *not* a capital city?

Answer: Belize City

Belmopan is the capital of Belize, though Belize City has a population several times higher than Belmopan does. San Salvador has been El Salvador's capital since 1839. Guatemala City was founded in 1776, replacing earthquake-ravaged Antigua Guatemala. Panama City has been Panama's capital since its independence.
9. The Río Coco (Coco River) is the longest river that runs entirely in the isthmus of Central America. It is on the border of which two countries?

Answer: Nicaragua & Honduras

The Río Coco flows in northern Nicaragua and southern Honduras. The origin of the river is in Somoto Canyon National Monument in Nicaragua, and it flows 750 km into the Caribbean Sea.
10. Five of the Central American countries achieved independence from Spain in the 19th century. Which country achieved its independence in 1903 from Colombia?

Answer: Panama

Although Spanish colonists arrived in Panama in the 16th century, Panama separated from Spain to join the Republic of Gran Colombia, which included Ecuador, Nueva Granada, and Venezuela. Shortly thereafter, the republic consisting of this union dissolved, and Panama and Nueva Granada became the Republic of Colombia.

In 1903, with United States influence, Panama broke off from Colombia and was established as its own nation.
