Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Corner Country Route starts at the large outback town of Broken Hill, New South Wales, which is renowned for what?

Answer: Mining

Home of BHP, Broken Hill is centre to New South Wales' mining industry, and the terminus of the Broken Hill Xplorer railway service from Sydney.
2. Travelling up the Silver City Highway, 175km north of Broken Hill you reach a small place known as Packsaddle. What is this place?

Answer: Roadhouse facility

Packsaddle was found in 1887 but the only thing that remains is the roadhouse. This is the only place to re-fuel between Broken Hill and Milparinka so naturally the price for petrol is exhorbitant.
3. What direction do you travel from the start town of Broken Hill to the outback town of Tibooburra?

Answer: North

The Silver City Highway between Broken Hill and Tibooburra is 335 kilometres long and consists of a two-lane paved highway. The roadhouse facility of Packsaddle and a very small tourist 'township' of Milparinka are the only two settlements along the way.
4. Going a further bit north-east, you reach NSW's most remote outback town, Tibooburra. What is the name of the National Park that is west of Tibooburra?

Answer: Sturt National Park

This national park incorporates the border between the states of New South Wales and Queensland and is the main attraction of Tibooburra. It is very dry with red sand dunes and rocky outcrops but also contains Lake Pinnaroo which fills intermittently supporting a habitat for a wide variety of birds.

The Mundoonan N.P. is just west of Yass in south-west New South Wales, Booderee N.P. is near Jervis Bay on the South Coast and the Croajingolong N.P. is in south-west Victoria.
5. Going further north-west from Tibooburra we reach Cameron Corner. What is significant about this place?

Answer: It is the place where QLD, NSW and SA meet

John Cameron first marked this place when he explored here in 1880. He tried to construct an obelisk to mark the place but couldn't find enough stone! Nowadays, there is a Corner Store here, where basic supplies as well as fuel are sold.
6. What main feature also runs north-south and turns 90 degrees east at Cameron Corner?

Answer: Dingo fence

Also known as the 'Dog Fence' it was previously built to keep dingoes from attacking the sheep. Now it is used to signal that sheep can be grazed south of the fence.
7. 113 kilometres from the state corner we reach the little outback town of Innamincka. Which famous explorers passed through this region?

Answer: Burke and Wills

Burke and Wills' led a party of explorers from Melbourne to try and traverse Australia in a north/south direction. Although they reached the north coast of Australia they were unable to complete their return journey and perished. Their bodies were found in 1862 and buried in Innamincka. John King, the survivor from the expedition was transported back to Melbourne.

Innamincka is a small town with supplies, fuel and accommodation.
8. Travelling south from Innamincka to Lyndhurst there two alternatives routes. There is the route via Moomba or there is the less-maintained and more rustic route. What is it called?

Answer: Old Strzelecki Track

The Old Strzelecki Track is hardly maintained so most experienced travellers recommend the route via Moomba. The Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks are two other major desert tracks through Central Australia. The Stuart highway is the major highway between Adelaide and Darwin.
9. Further south is the little 'town' of Moomba. Well, it's not a town actually, it's a private business that is not open to the public. What company owns this?

Answer: Santos Ltd

SANTOS stands for South Australia Northern Territory Oil Search and own all of the gas fields and exploration of the area.
10. 455 kilometres from Innamincka, we arrive at the conclusion of the Strzelecki Crossing. What town do we arrive at?

Answer: Lyndhurst

From Lyndhurst it is an easy drive on a paved two-lane road almost due south to Adelaide. Hope you've enjoyed your journey through the Corner Country, one of the most unique parts of Australia!
