Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What disputed territory contains the cities of Hebron and Jericho, and has a shoreline along the Dead Sea?

Answer: West Bank

West Bank is one of the territories on which the Arab-Israeli conflict has long been centered. It is about the size of Delaware, USA, and it comes within ten miles of the Mediterranean Sea at its western edge.
2. Which disputed territory borders Israel and Egypt, and has an area of 139 square miles?

Answer: Gaza Strip

Gaza Strip has an area of just 139 square miles, but in 2014 it held about 1.8 million people. This was a population density of about 13,000 people per square mile. There are five land crossing points into Gaza, but they are frequently closed. Goods are often smuggled into Gaza through tunnels from Egypt since a barrier prevents most movement of goods.
3. Which countries border the territory of Golan Heights?

Answer: Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan

Golan Heights is actually a Syrian territory. It is just 695 square miles in area (about half the size of Rhode Island). It borders the Sea of Galilee, or Lake Tiberias, in the southeast.
4. Which Israeli city is strategically located on the Gulf of Aqaba?

Answer: Eilat

Eilat had a 2014 population of about 47,000 people. It is located between Taba, Egypt and Aqaba, Jordan. It is Israel's only city on the Gulf of Aqaba, as Israel's shore along the Gulf of Aqaba is only approximately seven miles long. Some of Eilat's unique attractions include the Kings City Amusement Park and Coral World Underwater Observatory.
5. What is the highest point in Israel?

Answer: Mount Meron

The elevation of Mount Meron is 3963 feet. It is located in northern Israel, near the Lebanon border. Mount Ramon, Mount Hemet, and Mount Pitam are the second, third, and fourth tallest mountains, respectively.
6. In what general direction would I travel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem?

Answer: Southeast

Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are about 35 miles apart. Tel Aviv is situated in west-central Israel along the Mediterranean Sea, and Jerusalem is to its southeast along the border with West Bank.
7. Which of the following would I NOT find in the city of Bat Yam?

Answer: National Library of Israel

As it might be expected, the National Library of Israel is located in Jerusalem. It was only established in 2008. Bat Yam is a southern suburb of Tel Aviv. The Separated Beach is located on the Mediterranean, and only allows women Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and men on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Shalom Asch was an author and playwright. Edom Rock, also called "Adam's Rock", is a boulder in the Mediterranean at Bat Yam.
8. If I divide the number of feet below sea level of the surface of the Dead Sea by its estimated salt content percent (from 0 to 100, not decimals), which is closest to the answer I would get?

Answer: 42

The Dead Sea is 1401 feet below sea level and has an estimated salt concentration of 33.7 %. Thus, 1401 divided by 33.7 is approximately 42. The Dead Sea is the world's saltiest body of water, and its shoreline is split between West Bank, Israel, and Jordan. The edge of the Dead Sea is also the world's lowest point on land.
9. The city of Nazareth is within the present-day boundaries of Israel.

Answer: True

Nazareth is located north of West Bank and east of the city of Haifa. Nazareth, the hometown of Jesus, is about 2/3 Muslim and is a major Arab center of northern Israel.
10. Which of the following is a geological feature in the Negev Desert that is 25 miles long?

Answer: The Ramon Crater

The Ramon Crater was not actually formed by a meteorite, and therefore it is called a "makhtesh", a valley with steep walls and a single draining wadi. It is five miles wide and about 1650 feet deep. The Taurus Mountains are in Turkey and are much longer than 25 miles. Wadi al-Rummah is a dry riverbed in Saudi Arabia that is about 370 miles long. Lake Urmia is a saltwater lake in northwestern Iran that is 87 miles long.
