Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The origin of the state name is unknown?

Answer: True

It is possibly derived from a native word for homeland, "Hawaiki" or "wyhyhee".
2. Hawaii's state motto means "The life and love of the land"?

Answer: False

The state motto is "Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka Aina I Ka Pono", meaning "The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness".
3. What is Hawaii's state bird?

Answer: Nene

The nene or Hawaiian goose is the world's rarest goose. Its feet have less webbing than other geese, which is believed to be an adaptation to its habitat, rugged lava flows. Scientists believe that the nene evolved from Canada geese that flew to Hawaii long ago. Approximately 25,000 nenes once lived in Hawaii, but shortly after the islands were discovered by Westerners, the bird population dramatically decreased. By 1952, less than 30 nenes remained alive. Today, the bird is still an endangered species.
4. What is the state flower?

Answer: Yellow hibiscus

The hibiscus is native to Asia and Pacific Islands and has blossoms that come in hundreds of different color combinations. It was made the state flower on June 6, 1988.
5. What is the state fish?

Answer: Reef triggerfish

The Hawaiian triggerfish is small and swims throughout the tropics in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is named for its three dorsal fins. Once they are erect, the first and second spines cannot be pushed down. If the third spine is depressed, the other two automatically hold. It is called Humuhumunukunukuapua'a in Hawaiian.
6. What is the state tree?

Answer: Kukui

The kukui is also known as the candlenut, and became the state tree on May 1, 1959. It is native to South Pacific islands and has been introduced to may other climates, including North American. They have twisted trunks and light foliage, and are easy to identify.
7. What is Hawaii's state marine mammal?

Answer: Humpback whale

The humpback whale was made the state marine mammal in 1979.
8. Hawaii's state gem is black coral?

Answer: True

Black coral is popular in Hawaii for use in jewelry sold to tourists. Because it grows slowly and because of overharvesting, black coral is becoming scarce in the waters off the coasts of Hawaii. It was adopted as the state gem on April 22, 1987.
9. The state song is called "Hawaii Pono'i"?

Answer: True

The state song was written by King David Kalakaua and Professor Henry Berger, and the translation means "Hawaii's Own People".

Answer: 68 degrees F

Hawaii's landscape and warm, pleasant climate contribute to the state's attraction to tourists.
14. On which Hawaiian island can you find Wai'anapanapa State Park and Haleakala National Park?

Answer: Maui

These parks are known for their black-sand beaches and seaside caves.
15. How would you say "good evening" in Hawaiian?
