Answer: Nicosia

Nicosia, on the island of Cyprus, has an elevation of 165m. Athens, Cairo and Beirut are all by the sea.
2. Ankara, Sofia, Tirana, Jerusalem: the highest of these is the capital of the largest of the four respective countries. Which one would it be?

Answer: Ankara

Ankara, the capital of Turkey, has elevation of 891m. Jerusalem, Israel is at 821 m, Sofia, Bulgaria, 750m, and Tirana in Albania, 125m. It is hot in the Eastern Mediterranean, so you'd better build your house in the mountains!
3. Now some Western European capitals - Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, London: which one of them, also known for being built on seven hills, is the highest?

Answer: Rome

Rome has elevation of 115m (remember the 'seven hills of Rome'), Paris 80m, London 48m, and Amsterdam at sea level. Oh well, at middle latitudes, you can do well by the sea. Oh, and you can sail, too!

Brasilia, located in the Brasilian Highlands, has elevation of 700m, Santiago, Chile, 519m, Bern, Switzerland, 500m and Vienna, Austria, 200m. Oscar Niemeyer was its main urbanist, who in constructing the city, employed some important ideas of Le Corbusier.
5. Africa, the origin of mankind. Among the African capitals Pretoria, Khartoum, Cairo and Kinshasa, which is the furthest south and the highest above sea level?

Answer: Pretoria

Pretoria in South Africa is the furthest south of the options. It's also the highest as it is found 1,271 meters above sea level. Kinshasa is 240 meters above sea level, Khartoum 386 meters, and Cairo is only 23 metres above sea level.
6. Out of Africa and to Asia - Tehran, Kabul, Kathmandu, Riyadh: which one of them is the highest? Islam is the main religion there.

Answer: Kabul

Kabul is at an elevation of 1,799m, Kathmandu at 1,373m, Tehran at 1,219m and Riyadh at 600m.

Answer: Andorra la Vella

Andorra la Vella is at 1000m (it is in the Pyrenees), Madrid at 700m (Central Mezeta), San Marino at 387m, and Dublin lies 50m above sea level.

Canberra lies 700m above sea level. All other cities are practically at the sea level.

Sarajevo is at 500m above sea level, Skopje at 250m, Belgrade at 138m and Ljubljana at 290m above sea level.

Answer: La Paz

The lower parts of La Paz, Bolivia are 3,200m above sea level, while upper parts (El Alto), where the airport is located, is at 4,066 m! Quito, Ecuador, is at 2,800m, Bogota, Columbia at 2,660m and Mexico City at 2,259m. All these cities, except Mexico City, are in the tropical zone. The benefit of these cities being so high up in the mountains is that the altitude provides temperation of the hot and humid equatorial climate. Up there is nice 'n dry: you just climb up and up until you are comfortable with temperature!
