The Sarnath Lion was adopted by the Government of India on 26th January, 1950 (when India became a Republic). There are 4 lions though one is hidden from view.

The National Flag of India is so called "Tirangaa" (Tri-colour). It consists of 3 horizontal strips of saffron, white and green from top to bottom. There is a navy blue wheel (Chakra) on the white band. The ratio of width to length of the flag is 2:3.
