Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this city I bought Ben and Jerry's ice cream in Rockefeller Center before going up to the observation deck (the Top of the Rock). From there I could see the city's most famous park. Where was I?

Answer: New York City - USA

Rockefeller Center is a complex of nineteen high-rise buildings that officially opened in 1933. It's a hub for art, shopping, and entertainment. I took lots of beautiful cityscapes from the Top of the Rock. From up there you can see the most famous park in New York, which is of course, Central Park.

It has its own attractions, including Central Park Zoo, which has an indoor rainforest and a polar bear pool.
2. I've been to this city many times - sometimes to visit, sometimes just passing through. Euston, Blackfriars, and Heathrow are all transport hubs in which capital city?

Answer: London - England

Blackfriars is a tube station on the London Underground. If you get off there you'll be a short walk away from one of my favourite places in the world - the Tate Modern. Inside a disused power station lies a modern art gallery full of beautiful work from around the globe. Euston is most famous for being a national rail station.

Heathrow is the busiest airport in Britain, and the busiest passenger airport in Europe.
3. The Vltava (the longest river in the country) runs through this European city. Lots of historic pre-twentieth century buildings survive in the city centre - many more than other European cities. Despite this, the Astronomical Clock on the City Hall was destroyed. Which city did I go to?

Answer: Prague - Czech Repulic

Prague was occupied by Nazi Germany pretty quickly so there was no need to fight for it. As a result, many historic monuments remain. The fifteenth century Astronomical Clock was damaged during an uprising in 1945, but it has since been repaired and is beautiful to see. One of the most iconic monuments in Prague is the Charles Bridge, which crosses the Vltava. From the bridge you can see a row of yellow penguins! They light up at night as a guide for boats on the water.
4. This second city has a famous Bullring, Hippodrome, and a seasonal German market. Where is it?

Answer: Birmingham - England

I grew up around this city! The Bullring is a large shopping complex in Birmingham city centre, one of the busiest in the UK. The exterior of the Selfridges section of the shopping mall is artistically covered in lines of large silver discs. Every year, the city hosts a German Christmas market in November and December.

There are stalls all along New Street and in Victoria Square outside the city hall. They sell traditional food and gifts, such as pretzels and handcrafted toys. The Hippodrome is a theatre in Birmingham's Chinese Quarter.
5. Which city in the northeastern part of its country is built on 117 islands?

Answer: Venice - Italy

I visited Venice on an art school trip. The architecture there is beautiful! Some of the buildings date back to the 18th century, and some are even older. St Mark's Basilica (as it can be seen now) began construction in the 11th century, but there has been a church on the site since the 9th century.

The Ca' d'Oro is another old building. Known as the 'golden house', it is a 15th century Gothic style palace on the Grand Canal.
6. This capital city has a castle that sometimes has a dragon on top. The city's name is also the name of the bay, and is home to the Millennium Centre, the Temple of Peace and Health, and other notable locations used in the BBC TV show 'Doctor Who'. Where did I go?

Answer: Cardiff - Wales

If you've done any of my other quizzes you've probably noticed that I'm a fan of 'Doctor Who'... which is the reason I was in Cardiff! The Doctor Who Experience is a museum of props, costumes, and sets in Cardiff Bay. The Millennium Centre is an arts centre, and the Temple of Peace and Health is a Grade II listed civic building built in the 1930s.

The dragon on top of the castle is the image on the Welsh flag.
7. When I was visiting this city I saw a famous bell that cracked twice. Where was I?

Answer: Philadelphia - USA

The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia was supposed to be installed at Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall) but cracked on a stand when it was tested. It was recast twice but cracked again, and remains so today. While I was in Philadelphia I had one of their famous Philly Cheesesteaks - a roll full of beef, melted cheese, and onions.
8. Princes Street and the Royal Mile run through which city?

Answer: Edinburgh - Scotland

I got engaged in this city! The Royal Mile is a 1.2 mile road running through Edinburgh. At one end is Edinburgh Castle and at the other is the Palace of Holyrood (the British monarch's official residence in Scotland). The castle is on Castle Rock, a volcanic rock from an extinct volcano.
9. This beautiful city in England lies on the River Severn and has a cathedral. What's it called?

Answer: Worcester - England

Worcester is very special to me because it's where I went to university and where I met my partner. It truly is a beautiful place. The River Severn is the UK's longest river and it flows through the city. It has a swan sanctuary and lots and lots of swans! The oldest part of Worcester cathedral is the crypt, which dates back to the 10th century.
10. The Washington Monument is in which American city?

Answer: Washington DC - USA

There are lots of statues and memorials around Washington DC. They are just as - if not more - beautiful when they are lit up at night (and there are less tourists around). As well as the Washington Monument, there are memorials to Martin Luther King, Abraham Lincoln, and a very moving tribute to American WWII civilians and servicemen.

The Smithsonian Institution is also in DC. It's the world's largest museum complex, which includes the Air and Space Museum and the American History Museum.
