Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the following, for what reason is the city of Key West significant in the United States?

Answer: Within the continental United States, it contains the southernmost point.

The southernmost point in the continental United States is located about 90 miles north of Havana, Cuba. A buoy serves as a marker of the southernmost point and many stores and restaurants deem themselves to be the southernmost of their variety in the United States.
2. What major highway of the United States, ending in Key West, provides the only automobile road entering Key West?

Answer: U.S. 1

United States Highway 1 extends for 2,390 miles from Key West to Fort Kent in Maine. For much of its duration, U.S. 1 runs parallel to I-95. Some major cities that U.S. 1 goes through include Miami, Columbia, Raleigh, Richmond, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston.
3. Which major airline was founded in Key West in 1926 as a seaplane service?

Answer: Pan Am

Pan American World Airways was the primary international airline of the United States from its founding in the late 1920s to its closing on December 4, 1991. The airline suffered a huge loss when its Flight 103 exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. The cause of the explosion was a bomb placed in the cargo hold by terrorists.
4. Key West is the county seat of what Florida county?

Answer: Monroe County

Monroe County, created in 1823, was named after the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe. Although Monroe County contains part of mainland Florida, more than 99% of its population of 80,000 lives in the Florida Keys.
5. Residents of Key West are traditionally referred to as Conchs. Where did this nickname originate?

Answer: Immigrants from the Bahamas were called Conchs and then the term spread to all residents of Key West.

There are actually two different types of Conchs. "Salt Water Conch" describes a person born in Key West, while "Fresh Water Conch" refers to residents born outside of the island.
6. Of the following statements, which is NOT true regarding Key West?

Answer: The island was subject to the hottest recorded temperature in United States history on August 26th, 1956.

August 26th, 1956, was the hottest day in Key West's history when the temperature reached 97 degrees Fahrenheit, but this is much lower than the 134 degree temperature that Death Valley, California, was subjected to on July 10, 1913. Ernest Hemingway was known for his love of polydactyl (more than five toes on a foot) cats and the museum in Key West contains about 60 of them. Key West remained with the Union during the Civil War because a Naval base is located there.
7. In 1935, what natural disaster destroyed Key West's railroad system and killed over 500 residents of the island?

Answer: The Labor Day Hurricane

The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 was one of the strongest hurricanes ever to hit the United States. The hurricane had an extremely low pressure of 892 millibar and had sustained winds of 160 miles per hour. The destruction of the Florida Keys' railway system prompted the construction of the southern portion of highway U.S. 1 in 1938.
8. In my opinion, one of the most interesting events in U.S. history is the story of the Conch Republic of Key West. The government and residents of Key West became angered with the U.S. Border Patrol's decision to set up a roadblock and inspect all vehicles entering the city for narcotics and illegal immigrants. The inspections delayed traffic into the island, caused huge delays for tourists, and hurt the city's economy. The city petitioned the national government to remove the inspections, but they remained. As a last ditch effort, Key West formed its own republic. In what year did the city of Key West secede from the United States and form the Conch Republic?

Answer: 1982

The city council of Key West declared the independence of the Conch Republic on April 23, 1982. Many of the shops of Key West contain items adorned with the Conch Republic flag and motto.
9. Of the following, which of these actions did NOT occur under the Conch Republic?

Answer: The Republic boycotted all major U.S. corporations located on the island.

The formation of the Conch Republic was more of a symbolic protest against a government policy than an actual independence movement. The Republic surrendered one minute after it declared war. Shortly after the formation of the Conch Republic, the roadblock and inspections were removed and Key West was "readmitted" to the United States.
10. The Conch Republic went so far as to declare an official currency, weapon, language, and motto. Which of these is NOT correctly matched with the official Conch Republic identifier?

Answer: Esperanto was the official language

The official language of the Republic was English. As part of the protest, a loaf of stale Cuban bread was broken over the head of a man in a U.S. navy uniform. Although the conch shell was the official currency, I'm not sure what the exchange rate would have been when converting to U.S. dollars.
