Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Found in the Aegean Sea, the island of Santorini is a picturesque tourist destination in what nation?

Answer: Greece

Found amongst the Cyclades partway between Mainland Greece, Turkey, and Crete, the island of Santorini has emerged as one of Greece's most exciting resort destinations. Famous for its small fishing ports, hillside villages, and wineries, it benefits from beautiful Mediterranean weather and relative remoteness.

This being said, millions come across Santorini every year, making it one of the most-visited islands in the sea, and one of the most frequented destinations in the country.
2. What Chinese city was formerly known by the name Canton?

Answer: Guangzhou

Located at the mouth of the Pearl River Delta, the city of Guangzhou is one of China's largest and fastest-growing, being a major city for trade and commerce and only a short drive away from Hong Kong, Macau, Dongguan, and Shenzhen. While much of China speaks Mandarin Chinese, Guangzhou is considered the hub of Cantonese China, being a home to a distinctly different Chinese culture that extends not only into arts, but language as well.

The Pearl River, which passes through the city on the way to the South China Sea, stretches nearly two thousand five hundred kilometres west to Kunming.
3. One of the largest cities in Sweden, which of these locations sits directly across the Kattegat from Denmark's northern tip?

Answer: Gothenburg

After Stockholm, Gothenburg is Sweden's second-largest city. Built as a convenient port and fortified base of operations at the edge of the Baltic Sea, Gothenburg remains one of the most important shipping locations amongst the Scandinavian nations. Directly across the strait (known as the Kattegat), is the Danish port town of Skagen, the northernmost mainland destination in Denmark.
4. In which country can you visit Tikal?

Answer: Guatemala

The Mayan Ruins of Tikal, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing the area's National Park, are found deep in the rainforests of Northern Guatemala and are amongst some of the best preserved landmarks of Central America. They're one of many fascinating sites in the nation of Guatemala, a country sitting between Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras. Though the nation has had a history of political strife, especially coming out of the twentieth century, it's an almost-unmatched destination for archeological tourism, sandy beaches, and cruise ports of call.
5. What rocky desert found throughout China and Mongolia once contained the Mongol city of Karakorum?

Answer: The Gobi Desert

Amongst the largest deserts on the planet, the Gobi was, at one time, smaller. Years of human influence on the area (and the planet) has increased the spread of the Gobi, pushing it deeper into Mongolia and Northern China because of the latter's continual aims at urbanization.

This said, the Gobi has long been frequented by both, having had its trade routes cut through the rocky landscape. At one point, the Great Wall also expanded into this reach of China, far to the west. Because of how far north this desert is compared to most in the world, it's also prone to frost.

The landscape can freeze and thaw on a daily basis.
6. What beautiful Alpine lake is split between Switzerland and France?

Answer: Lake Geneva

One of the largest lakes in Europe, Lake Geneva is home to (of course) the City of Geneva but also Lausanne and Montreux. Found in the Alps, it's fed by the Rhône River as it continues to Lyon and Avignon on the way to the French Coast. The City of Geneva is particularly important on an international level, being the home of the United Nations and the Red Cross.

Despite being one of the most expensive cities to live in in the world (on a consistent basis), it's also considered one of the most liveable.
7. The Ogooué River cuts almost entirely through what African nation?

Answer: Gabon

One of the longest waterways in Africa and likely one of its lesser-known, the Ogooué River starts in the northern edge of the Republic of the Congo and flows across nearly the entirety of Gabon as it makes its way westward to the Atlantic Coast. The river pushes to a spot south of Port Gentil, one of the larger cities in Gabon, but along its route there are very few settlements.

It actually passes through virtually untouched rainforest and wilderness along the majority of its path. Gabon sits on the Equator and is composed of mountains near the coast, rainforests in its center, and savannah in its far east.
8. The city of Varanasi, India, sits on what holy river?

Answer: Ganges

One of a number of religiously-significant rivers in India, the Ganges starts in the Himalayas and flows through much of Northeastern India and into the nation of Bangladesh (where it becomes the Padma and flows into the Bay of Bengal). The Ganges has numerous tributaries as well, managing to touch the cities of Kolkata, New Delhi, Agra, and Patna on the India side and Dhaka in Bangladesh. Varanasi, one of the cities that relies on the waterway the most, has used the river as part of religious ceremony for millennia.
9. What expanse of coral reefs found off the Australian coast is the largest living structure in the world?

Answer: Great Barrier Reef

Stretching more than two thousand kilometres along the northeastern coast of Australia, the Great Barrier Reef is considered one of the natural wonders of the world. Found in the aptly-named Coral Sea, it's comprised of vast amounts of native wildlife and undersea plant life not seen anywhere else in the world.

It also happens to be one of the sites most in danger due to climate change, making constant conservation efforts necessary for its survival. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, found in Kirwan, is partway between Cairns and Brisbane.
10. Though part of the Greater Cairo Area, what Egyptian city is home to the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx?

Answer: Giza

One of Africa's largest cities (even considering Cairo as a separate city), Giza is home to the famous Giza Plateau, the site of the last remaining Ancient Wonder of the World, the Great Pyramids. It goes without saying that the Giza Plateau is the focus here since it's Egypt and, likely, Africa's most famous landmark, home to the Sphinx and the necropolis complex.

The ancient capital of Memphis, found only a short distance south, used this site more than four thousand years ago; the monuments held up!
