Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The North American continent touches three of these oceans. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Indian Ocean

North America is the third largest continent by area (after Asia and Africa). Its coastal borders are: the Pacific Ocean to the west; the Atlantic Ocean to the east; and the Atlantic Ocean (and Caribbean Sea) to the south. It also borders the Arctic Ocean to the north.
2. Several parts of North America include regions where French is a primary language (often along with English). Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: Utah

French is one of the two official languages of Canada (along with English), with significant Francophone populations found in both Quebec and Ontario. The US state of Louisiana also has a strong French history, being claimed for France by Rene-Robert Cavalier in 1682.

It was named after the French king at the time, Louis XIV, and has retained much of its French culture despite having been acquired (at various times) by Germany, Britain and Spain before Napoleon claimed it back for France in 1800.
3. North America is the odd continent out because all of its mountain ranges are restricted to a single country (i.e. they don't cross any international borders).

Answer: False

North America includes a number of mountain ranges that cross the border. One of the most famous examples is the Rocky Mountains, which cover a vast area from British Colombia in Canada, all the way down to New Mexico.
4. Which of the following is NOT an island off the coast of North America?

Answer: Bora Bora

Bora Bora lies in the South Pacific, northwest of Tahiti. Both Prince Edward Island and Iles De La Madeleine lie in the Gulf of St Lawrence off Canada's east coast, while San Juan Island sits to the west of the US, off the coast of Washington state.
5. Which of these is not a body of water off the coast of North America?

Answer: Gulf of Tonkin

The Gulf of Tonkin lies to the east of North Vietnam. The Gulf of Mexico lies to the south of the US, between Mexico and Cuba, while the Amundsen Gulf (north coast) and the Gulf of St Lawrence (east coast) are both off Canada.
6. North America is the odd continent out because it houses the world's first ever national park (using that term).

Answer: True

Yellowstone National Park was the first of its kind worldwide, declared in 1872. On March 1st of that year, then President Ulysses S Grant signed the Act of Dedication Law to create the park. Yellowstone is almost 3.5 million square miles in area, covering parts of the US states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.
7. Which of these is NOT a river that runs through North America?

Answer: Apies River

The Apies River lies in Pretoria, South Africa. The Roanoke flows through Virginia and South Carolina in the US; the Rio Grande through southern US and Mexico; and the Okanagan (a tributary of the Columbia) through British Columbia and Washington.
8. Of the three major hot deserts on the North American continent, which is the odd one out because it only lies in a single country?

Answer: Mojave Desert

The Mojave lies largely in California, but also crosses into Nevada, Utah and Arizona. It borders an even larger desert known as the Great Basin Desert which is a 'cold' desert due to its location under the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Both the Chihuahuan Desert and the Sonoran Desert cross the US/Mexico border.
9. Which of these is NOT a city in North America?

Answer: Roubaix

Roubaix can be found in Northern France. The remaining options are found in the USA (Temecula, California); Canada (Regina, Saskatchewan); and Mexico (Ecatepec, State of Mexico).
10. True or false? When all the major regions of North America (the US states, Canadian provinces/territories, and Mexican states) are ranked by size, Canada is the odd country out, because it has none in the top three.

Answer: False

Canada actually has two of the biggest three, including the largest. Nunavut sits at just over 2 million square km, followed by Alaska (1.7 million), then Quebec (1.5 million).
