Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With an area of about 11,600 square kilometers, Qatar is one of the smallest nations on Earth. Which nation, located to the south, is the only country to border Qatar?

Answer: Saudi Arabia

The nation of Qatar is part of the Qatar Peninsula that is located on the much larger Arabian Peninsula. Qatar's main landmass is located just 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the island nation of Bahrain.
2. Since the nation of Qatar is a peninsula that means it is surrounded on three sides by water. What body of water, that borders eight countries in total, forms most of the territorial borders of Qatar?

Answer: Persian Gulf

In addition to Qatar, the Persian Gulf also borders Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Some major cities located on this important body of water include Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Kuwait City, and Manama. The surface area of the Persian Gulf is 251,000 km2 and it has an average depth of 50 meters.
3. In spite of the small size of Qatar, it has a considerable amount of biodiversity. Which animal is the national animal of Qatar as well as being the national animal of Jordan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain?

Answer: Arabian oryx

The Arabian oryx was declared extinct in the wild around 1970. Zoos and other conservation organizations were able to keep the species alive and eventually the Arabian oryx was reintroduced to the wild in 1980. In 2011, its status was changed from endangered to vulnerable, becoming the first animal to reach this status after having previously been declared extinct in the wild.
4. In southeastern Qatar, there is a small settlement and inlet known in Arabic as Khawr al Udayd. This locale was a popular staging area for pirates during the mid-1800s from which they raided vessels near Abu Dhabi. What nickname is used to describe this area that has at times also been used to describe the Caspian and what was once believed to occupy much of Australia?

Answer: Inland Sea

Interestingly in the 2010 census, for Khawr al Udayd there were 42 inhabitants, all of which were male. During the 1830s, many of the residents of eastern Qatar would actually assist pirates in their pillaging and the British eventually sent a naval force to the area. Over time the tensions rose to the point where Abu Dhabi and Qatar were in a state of war for about 10 years during the 1870s and 1880s.
5. From the mid-19th century, the Al Thani family has had a significant amount of control over Qatari politics. There were an estimated 20,000 family members during the 1990s so it's not surprising that during the 20th century alone there were three forced abdications. From what city, the site of the Consultative Assembly of Qatar, does the Al Thani family rule?

Answer: Doha

Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani is often called the founder of Qatar and he is celebrated as the man that led the resistance against the Ottoman army in the late 19th century. Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani became the Emir of Qatar at the age of 33 following the abdication of his father in 2013. Located on the Persian Gulf on the eastern coast of Qatar, Doha is the country's capital and largest city.
6. Located about 60 miles from the country's capital is an industrial city where oil was first discovered in Qatar. What is the name of this city where oil was struck in 1937 and where full oil fields were completed in 1954?

Answer: Dukhan

The state oil agency Qatar Petroleum controls access to the city of Dukhan and a special permit is needed to enter the city. In 2016, the Dukhan Oil Field had a production of about 335,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Not surprisingly given this production, Qatar was a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries in 2016.
7. Given its location and size it may not be surprising that the highest point in Qatar is only 103 meters (343 feet) above sea level. What is the name of this 'high' point whose name comes from Arabic words meaning flat hill and flat shaped toy?

Answer: Qurayn Abu al Bawl

Qurayn Abu al Bawl is located in southern Qatar near the border with Saudi Arabia. The lowest point of Qatar is at sea level along the Persian Gulf. The total coastline of Qatar is 563 kilometers (350 miles) and along the coast, there are several coral reefs and natural salt flats.
8. An important island lies about 80 kilometers northeast of the capital of Qatar. This island is utilized as a storage and loading area for oil as well as a base for the country's navy. What is the name of this island that has a length of just about 1.6 kilometers (1 mile)?

Answer: Halul Island

Halul Island was totally transformed from a relatively undeveloped area in the early 1900s when pearling boats frequented the area to an industrial area holding 5 million barrels of crude oil. Due to its location in the Persian Gulf, Halul Island is susceptible to a northwesterly wind called a shamal that can cause massive sandstorms.
9. In 2013, an area in northwestern Qatar was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This designation caused a 170% increase in tourism to the area in 2014. What is the name of this area that is known for its renovated fort and a museum featuring exhibits on pearling and astronomy?

Answer: Zubarah

Zubarah was founded in the mid-1700s by merchants from Kuwait who utilized it as a center for trade and pearl fishing. The area is considered to provide an understanding of life on the Persian Gulf before the 20th century discovery of oil that totally transformed lifestyles and the economy.
10. In 2004 the nation of Qatar was divided into seven municipalities. With an area of 5,818 square kilometers this municipality was by far the largest created. With a name similar to a manufactured fiber, what is this municipality whose name in Islam means 'One of the Gates of Paradise'?

Answer: Al Rayyan

In 2010, the census registered a population of 468,695 people in the Al Rayyan municipality, well below that of Doha's population of 796,947 in 2010. The main settlement is also called Al Rayyan and it is known for its ancient castles, universities, and public gardens.
