1. The Lower Mainland has an extensive transit network. In what year was the network voted "Transit System of the Year"?

Answer: 1996

Since then the transit system has suffered setbacks, including a three month long strike in the summer of 2001 and a large delay in the building of a new branch of Skytrain.
2. What international competition is held in Vancouver during the summer months that consistently draws in crowds in the hundreds of thousands?

Answer: The Celebration of Light

Formerly known as the Symphony of Fire, The Celebration of Light is an international pyrotechnics (or fire works) competition held just off of English Bay in Vancouver. Every year hundreds of thousands of people crowd the beaches to witness the spectacle.
3. What annual concert is held, symbolizing the end of the school year for many university students?

Answer: Arts County Fair

Arts County Fair is held at Thunderbird Stadium at the University of British Columbia. Typically, it takes place on the last day of classes of the spring semester, and has featured bands like Swollen Members, and Great Big Sea.
4. Vancouver plays host to the second largest ten kilometer run in all of North America. What is this run called?

Answer: The Sun Run

One of Vancouver's local newspapers, the Vancouver Sun is the sponsor of this annual race. The Sun Run usually takes place in late April, usually involving more than 45,000 runners and walkers.
5. What large natural area in the lower mainland is home to black bears, deer, coyotes, beavers, sphagnum moss, Labrador tea, and a sunken tractor?

Answer: Burns Bog

Burns Bog, nestled between Delta and the Fraser River, is a diverse ecosystem, home to many different species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and plants. The bog is dotted with spots of quicksand and soft peat. A thief found this out when he tried to drive a stolen tractor down into the bog.

The bog claimed the tractor as well as another tractor that was sent in to rescue the first. Now all that is visible of either tractor is a metal edge sticking out of the sludge.
6. This university has the reputation for the highest suicide rate in all of British Columbia.

Answer: Simon Fraser University

While Simon Fraser University is one of the top universities in all of Canada, it is said to have the highest suicide rate in BC. Some speculate this is because of SFU's isolated location (built on top of a mountain), its architecture (made mostly of cement) and the dreary weather (rain and fog almost year round). The reputation may be undeserved, however.
7. What is the city of Surrey's motto?

Answer: The future lives here.

Surrey has many parks, including Bear Creek Park with it's extensive forests, salmon spawning creek, public swimming pool, water park, track, and playground. The city's motto was changed from one reflecting the natural scenery of town to one for the future. The motto is now "The future lives here".
8. To which major sporting event was Vancouver host in the year 2010?

Answer: The Winter Olympics

9. What is the name of Vancouver's hockey team?

Answer: Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks are the darling of the lower mainland. Although the Canucks have never won the Stanley Cup, their 1993-1994 season was the best in decades, with the Canucks reaching the finals and losing to the New York Rangers in the seventh game.
10. What major Lower Mainland city is on an island?

Answer: Richmond

Richmond, whose motto is "Island City, by Nature", is located at the mouth of the Fraser River. Richmond is also unique in the fact that it has literally no hills.
