Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which are the two commercial ski fields in the Queenstown area?

Answer: Coronet Peak and The Remarkables

Queenstown is the best known destination in New Zealand for skiing, and is also a mecca for tourists throughout the year. The Queenstown area is world renowned for its scenery and abundance of adventure sports.
2. Treble Cone is most closely associated with which town?

Answer: Wanaka

Treble Cone is one of three ski fields in the Wanaka area. It is on the western side of Lake Wanaka, not far past Glendhu Bay. The other two ski fields are Cardrona and Snow Fields NZ, which are on opposite sides of the Cardrona Valley.
3. Which commercial skifield is closest to Christchurch?

Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island. Porters Ski Area and Mount Hutt are both less than two hours' drive away, which makes them very popular, with Porters being a few kilometres closer.

Answer: In Mid Canterbury, near Lake Coleridge

Mount Olympus is a club ski field on the southern side of the Craigeburn Range. It is just over two hours drive from Christchurch.
5. Driving east out of Lake Tekapo township, you almost immediately turn left and drive along the eastern side of Lake Tekapo. Which skifield are you going to?

Answer: Roundhill

Roundhill is a fairly low ski field and declining winter snowfall led to its closure in the 1990s. However, decreases in the cost of snow making equipment and willing backers meant it reopened and is once again a very popular family oriented skifield in the Mackenzie Country.
6. Which ski field is in the Nelson Lakes area?

Answer: Rainbow

When Rainbow first opened it was a commercial operation. It was subsequently taken over by a community run trust.
7. Invincible Snowfields could be best described as what?

Answer: A small privately owned ski area near Glenorchy

At the time of writing in 2010 Invincible Snowfields could probably be described as the most exclusive ski field in NZ, requiring helicopter access and having a hut that sleeps only ten. It has a rope tow and thus can be called a ski field.
8. Mount Robert in the Nelson Lakes District is most accurately described as what?

Answer: a former club skifield

Mount Robert is visible from the top of Rainbow ski field, on the other side of Lake Rotoiti. The opening of Rainbow ski field and the declining reliability of snow were both factors in the closure.
9. What is the name of the small club ski field in North Otago?

Answer: Awakino

Awakino is a not widely known outside of North Otago and South Canterbury. It is nestled into the Northern end of the Kakanui Mountain range behind Kurow.
10. You drive north out of Omarama on State Highway 8, and after about 12kms you turn left. Which ski field are you going to?
