Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first sea we encounter is a colourful one. He has good connections with the Sea of Marmara. Its location is between two continents. Which sea have we come across?

Answer: Black Sea

The Black Sea is a relatively large sea located near the southeastern part of Europe. It is bordered by countries such as Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Ukraine and Russia. There are only a few official seas that take their name from a colour, the other ones being the Red Sea, the Yellow Sea and the White Sea. It is often seen as an inland sea, but it does have a connection to the Sea of Marmara to the south via the Bosphorus strait. This connection is near the city of Istanbul, where the Bosphorus strait connects the Asian and European parts of Turkey.

The Sea of Marmara makes the connection between the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea through the Dardanelles Strait. The Aegean Sea ultimately connects to the Mediterranean Sea. To the north, the Black Sea also connects to the Sea of Azov, through the Strait of Kerch. This sea is located near Russia and the Crimean Peninsula in Ukraine.
2. The sea we encounter next is a bit of a cold type. Its name was derived from the last name of an admiral who has explored the Antarctic region. What is the name of this icy sea?

Answer: Bellingshausen Sea

The Bellingshausen Sea is located to the west of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is not one of the important seas of the area. To the south is the Amundsen Sea. To the east we find the part of the peninsula called Ellsworth Land, named for the American explorer Lincoln Ellsworth. To the north is Alexander Island, the largest island in Antarctica.

The Bellingshausen Sea was named after Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen. He explored the Antarctic region extensively on behalf of the Russian tsar Alexander I. Alexander Island was originally called Alexander I Island to honour the tsar. Various locations in the area are named after von Bellingshausen, such as the Bellingshausen Station (a Russian Antarctic base) and the Bellingshausen Plate (a tectonic plate in the area).
3. The next sea can be a little tough, as some may not directly view him as a sea. He certainly has important places next to him like Kolkata and Chennai. What is the name of this sea near India?

Answer: Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal is located in the northeastern part of the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by countries such as India, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Many important rivers flow into the Bay of Bengal, such as the Ganges and the Brahmaputra. Cities that have a port on this bay include Kolkata and Chennai, making the area an important part of the economic growth of the country of India.

Its name is derived from the region of Bengal in this area. The sea includes several islands belonging to India, such as the Andaman Islands. Many famous beaches in the area overlook the Bay of Bengal, like Mandarmani and Chandipur. The region can be prone to cyclones as well however, like the cyclone near Bhola in 1970, that caused many victims.
4. The next sea is another cold type, but is more up north. He has a strong connection with the wind. What is the name of this chilly northerner?

Answer: Beaufort Sea

The Beaufort Sea is one of the smaller seas in the Arctic region. It is located to the north of the American state of Alaska and Canada. The Mackenzie River flows into this sea. To the east is Banks Island, one of the larger islands in the region, and to the west is the Chukchi Sea. This sea connects to the Bering Sea via the Bering Strait.

The sea was named after the Irish hydrographer Francis Beaufort. He is also the creator of the Beaufort Scale, a wind scale that is widely used. He also gave his name to an island in the Antarctic Region and an inlet in the Atlantic Ocean.
5. The next sea has many explanations for his name, but some of the countries next to him are collectively given the same name. With connections to the Kattegat and the Gulf of Finland, he is well connected. What is the name of this European sea?

Answer: Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea is located in northern Europe. It is bordered by countries like Sweden and Finland, but also by the countries Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. These last countries are often called the Baltic countries collectively. The exact origin of the name is not agreed upon by experts. Some say it is of Germanic origin, others will say it is more of Latin origin.

To the west, the Baltic Sea will connect to the Kattegat, to the north it is bordered by various gulfs like the Gulf of Bothnia, the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Riga. These gulfs are often seen as part of the Baltic Sea itself.
6. Next up is a somewhat smaller sea in the southeastern part of Asia. It is named for the island it is near to. What is the name of this sea near Indonesia?

Answer: Bali Sea

The Bali Sea can be found to the north of the Indonesian island of the same name. It is often regarded as part of the Flores Sea, but is frequently mentioned as a separate sea. To the north is the larger Java Sea, also named for an Indonesian island.

The sea has a connection to the Indian Ocean via the Bali Strait. This strait is located between the Indonesian islands of Java and Bali. To the west of the Bali sea is the Madura Strait, the strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Madura.
7. The next sea is a bit of a Mediterranean type. He is small, but has several islands in it with the same name. What is the name of this European sea?

Answer: Balearic Sea

The Balearic Sea is a small sea to the north of the Mediterranean Sea. In this sea you also find the Balearic Islands, a popular tourist destination with islands such as Ibiza and Mallorca. To the west lies Spain. The Spanish river Ebro flows in the Balearic Sea.

Often the Balearic Sea is seen as part of the Mediterranean Sea. To the north is the Gulf of Lion, which is bordered by the French city of Marseille. To the northeast is the Ligurian Sea, bordering the Italian mainland and the French island of Corsica.
8. The next sea is one of the many named after a person, a German chancellor no less. It is near an archipelago of the same name and Papua New Guinea. What is the name of this Pacific sea?

Answer: Bismarck Sea

The Bismarck Sea forms part of the Pacific Ocean, near Papua New Guinea. It is mostly known for a naval battle in World War II where the Japanese were majorly defeated. It is known as the Battle of the Bismarck Sea and took place in March 1943.

To the north and east is the Bismarck Archipelago. These islands form a part of Papua New Guinea and are to the north of the island of New Guinea. Both the sea and the archipelago are named for the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck. To the south, the Bismarck Sea connects to the Solomon Sea through the Vitiaz Strait.
9. The next sea takes us to China, where we find a small sea connected to the Yellow Sea and close to the Chinese capital of Beijing. What is the name of this Chinese sea?

Answer: Bohai Sea

The Bohai Sea is a small sea in the northeastern part of China, and also called the Gulf of Bohai. It is located near the Bay of Bohai and two other bays called the Laizhou Bay and the Liaodong Bay. To the south of the sea is the Yellow Sea and to the northeast is Korea Bay, connected by the Bohai Strait.

The sea is located in an important area of China as its proximity to the Chinese capital of Beijing makes the small sea very busy. Plans have long been made to connect the various peninsulas in the area by bridge across the Bohai Strait.
10. The final sea is also named for an explorer, more specifically a Dutch navigator. What is the name of this Arctic sea?

Answer: Barents Sea

The Barents Sea is a small sea located to the north of Finland and Russia. To the east of it lies the island of Nova Zembla. The sea is named for the Dutch navigator Willem Barents. Barents and his crew were forced to spend the winter on the island of Nova Zembla on their third voyage to the area. Barents died there, although it is not known whether he is buried there or not (possibly at sea).

To the north of the sea is the Russian island Franz Josef Land. To the east, beyond Nova Zembla, is the Kara Sea. One of the major cities to border the Bering Sea is the Russian port of Murmansk. Originally the sea was called the Murman Sea.
