Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these major Ohio cities is NOT a city in Iowa?

Answer: Cleveland

Toledo is a twin city, connected with Tama, 50 miles east of Des Moines. Akron is a small town just off the South Dakota border. Dayton is an even smaller town near Ft. Dodge. There is no Cleveland in Iowa. Iowa also boasts a Columbus Junction.
2. Time to go to Scandinavia. Which of these Scandinavian countries is also an Iowa city?

Answer: Norway

Norway is a sparsely populated town near Cedar Rapids, IA. There are no cities named Sweden, Finland or Iceland in Iowa. There is, however, a Denmark in Iowa. Denmark is unincorporated, but it has a ZIP code.
3. Time for a bit of Civil War history: all of the choices are Civil War battle sites. However, only one is a city in Iowa. Which is it?

Answer: Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is a town in the northeast corner of Iowa. The Battle of Fredericksburg occurred in December 1862 in Virginia, with a second battle happening five months later.
4. Now let's go across the ocean. But which ocean? One city in Iowa has the name of one of our world's oceans. Not counting towns with more than one word, which Iowa city has an ocean name?

Answer: Atlantic

Atlantic, IA is a substantial city in Southwest Iowa (OK, substantial for Iowa). To clarify, there is a small town, also in Southwest Iowa, called Pacific Junction. However, it is not just called Pacific.
5. Now for some mountain sightseeing. Mountains? In Iowa? Well, Iowa does have cities named after mountains. Which of these "mountain" cities doesn't exist in Iowa?

Answer: Mt. Sinai

Mount Carmel is located in West Central Iowa. Mt. Etna is in Southwest Iowa, and Mt. Zion is in far Southeast Iowa. All are very small towns, but they are on the map, nowhere close to a mountain. The true Mt. Carmel and Mt. Zion are mountains from the Biblical regions. Mt. Etna is an active Sicilian volcano, over 10,000 feet, or over 3,100 meters high.
6. There are several Iowa cities that double as European capitals. Which of these is a European capital, but NOT a city in Iowa?

Answer: Prague

While none of these Iowa cities have similar populations to their equivalent European cities, they all exist in Iowa--with the exception of Prague. However, the Madrid in Iowa is locally pronounced "MAD-rid" as opposed to "ma-DRID". Paris, IA is just north of Cedar Rapids. Lisbon, IA is just east of Cedar Rapids, and Madrid, IA is about 30 miles north of Des Moines.
7. There are several "state capitals" in Iowa besides Des Moines. Which "state capital" can you NOT visit without leaving Iowa?

Answer: Raleigh

Denver, IA is just north of Waterloo in the Northeast quadrant of Iowa. Lansing, IA is on the Mississippi River in the top Southeast corner of Iowa. Additionally, Jackson, IA is in the Eastern tip of Iowa, just below Dubuque. Denver, Lansing, and Jackson are the capitals of Colorado, Michigan, and Mississippi respectively.

Other "state capitals" you can find in Iowa: Charleston, Salem, Hartford, Lincoln, and Trenton. Oh, and Des Moines.
8. Historically, there have not been any NFL football teams in Iowa (sigh). However, there are NFL cities in Iowa, all from the AFC. Which of these American Football Conference cities does not have a match in Iowa?

Answer: Baltimore

Buffalo, Cincinnati, and Oakland are small towns in Iowa. No word on whether the fan bases for those three teams are higher in those towns due to the town names, but I suspect they are. Buffalo is located on the Mississippi River on the Central Eastern border. Cincinnati sits along the Missouri border. Finally, Oakland, IA sits near Omaha/Council Bluffs on the Western Iowa border.
9. Of these New York City boroughs, which one appears as the name of a city in Iowa?

Answer: Brooklyn

Brooklyn is a town in Eastern Iowa just off of Interstate 80. It boasts a main street lined with the flags of all 50 states, along with a few other themed flags. Its motto is the "community of flags".
10. A few state names appear in Iowa as town names. Which of these is NOT both a U.S. state and a city in Iowa?

Answer: Montana

Washington is near Iowa City. I hold a grudge toward the town as they knocked my alma mater out of the High School Basketball tourney when I was a junior in high school. Probably time to let that go, as it was back in 1986. Anyway, Nevada is just north of Des Moines, near Ames.

The school hosts about three trivia fund raiser events each winter. I highly recommend going. Interesting fact: Iowa pronounces it "ne-VAY-duh", unlike the state pronunciation, "ne-VAH-duh". Lastly, Wyoming, IA is just east of Cedar Rapids.
