Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I live in the city of Cairns. As of 1st January 2005, did Cairns have an airport?

Answer: both domestic and international

Direct international flights go to a number of Japanese destinations, however there are also international flight links through Sydney and Brisbane to many overseas destinations.
2. What is the name of the beautiful tablelands just half an hour's drive from Cairns?

Answer: Atherton Tablelands

The Atherton Tablelands are a wonderful place to visit and can be cooler than the coast due to their altitude. There you can see many waterfalls, green farmlands and beautiful crater lakes.
3. Amongst the nicest sights on the Tablelands are the many waterfalls at the southern end. Which of these are waterfalls on the tablelands?

Answer: Millaa Millaa Falls, Elinjaa Falls and Mungalli Falls

My favourite is Millaa Millaa Falls, though nearly every time I have been there it has been raining. These falls are small by international standards but the pretty rainforest setting makes them very appealing. It's also lovely to have a cool dip on a hot day. Millaa Millaa is aboriginal for "plenty water".
4. Still on the Tablelands, three of these are pretty crater lakes, formed in the craters of extinct volcanoes. The other is a water catchment lake caused by damming a river. Which is the odd one out?

Answer: Lake Tinaroo

Mt Hypipamee Crater is very deep and is lovely to see although you can't swim there. At Lake Barrine a very informative cruise will introduce you to the ecosystem of the lake. Lake Barrine is a really pretty crater lake and a great place for a swim, but Lake Tinaroo is the odd one out, as a dam wall forms this lake. Tinaroo is one of the favourite local water sports venues, but its main purpose is to provide irrigation water to farms all over the Tablelands.
5. Kuranda is an arty town just at the top of the range from Cairns. What is the name of the award-winning cable car which travels over the rainforest canopy up to Kuranda, allowing passengers a tree-top view of our heritage rainforest?

Answer: Skyrail

The Skyrail has won many Australian, Queensland and international awards since its opening in 1995. Skyrail runs over 32 towers for a distance of 7.5 km from Cairns to Kuranda, and you can get out halfway for a guided tour of the rainforest.
6. What lovely feature has in recent years been built along the Cairns foreshore for the free use of tourists and residents alike?

Answer: All of these

The lovely swimming pool, called "The Lagoon" is the main drawcard, but people enjoy a stroll along the boardwalk and the children enjoy the selection of playgrounds. The beach was made on the shore where a beach would have been had it not been a mudflat. The Lagoon is filled with seawater which is additionally treated.
7. What is the name of the living attraction in the ocean about 25km from Cairns that many of our tourists come to see?

Answer: Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef in the world, measuring over 2000km in length and 72km wide at its widest point. It is made entirely of living and dead organisms, as it is constructed of live and dead coral spores.
8. Two hours north of Cairns is a famous rainforest area with a river of the same name. What is the name of this river and rainforest that draw thousands of tourists every year?

Answer: Daintree

Tourists come to see the salt-water crocodiles in the river and the rainforest that runs right down to the beach.
The other three names are towns around the area.
9. How far is it to drive from Cairns to Queensland's capital city Brisbane, which is in the south of the state?

Answer: 1750km

It takes us two ten-hour days (with meal and toilet stops) to drive to Brisbane, 24 hours in the train or two hours by air.
10. With such an idyllic environment, you wouldn't think there would be anything keeping people out of the water, but there is. Signs warn people to keep out of some swimming sites at various times. What are the dangers?

Answer: rip tides, marine stingers and salt water crocodiles

Many creek, river and estuary areas are unsafe for swimming due to the presence of aggressive salt water crocodiles, but these tend to be the muddy ones and there are much nicer places to swim.
Marine stingers visit our beaches in the summer months, between October and June, so swimmers need to swim inside the large netted enclosures or wear a special suit. The best swimming during summer is offshore or in the many lakes and cool mountain creeks and rivers.
