Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We all think of Canada as our neighbor to the north, however, there are states, or portions of states, that lie north of the southernmost point of Canada. Do you know how many?

Answer: 27

Surprising isn't it? More than half of the states in the US are at least partially north of the southernmost point of Canada. By the way, Canada's southernmost point is Middle Island in Lake Erie at 41 degrees and 41 minutes north.
2. We all think of Mexico as our neighbor to the south, however, there are states, or portions of states, that lie south of the northernmost point of Mexico. Do you know how many?

Answer: 11

Not many people would think there are portions of that many states that lie south of a portion of Mexico. The northernmost point of Mexico, by the way, is at Monumento 206 at the US border at 32 degrees, 43 minutes and 6 seconds north.
3. Here's an interesting question. How many states, or portions of states, lie both north of the southernmost point of Canada and south of the northernmost point of Mexico?

Answer: 1

California, which stretches from 32 degrees 30 seconds to 42 degrees north, holds the distinction of being the only state that is both north of parts of Canada and south of parts of Mexico.
4. Each state in the US has a highest elevation point. Which state has the lowest elevation high point?

Answer: Florida

Florida's Britton Hill with an elevation of 345 feet is the lowest high spot of all the states. The highest elevation in Delaware is 448 feet followed by Louisiana (535 feet) and Mississippi (806 feet).
5. Each state in the US has a lowest elevation point. Which state has the highest elevation low point?

Answer: Colorado

At 3315 feet, Colorado has the highest elevation low point of all the states in the US. It is located at the Arikaree River near the Kansas border. Of note is that this point is higher than the highest elevations of 21 states.
6. The lowest elevation for 22 states is sea level (0 feet). How many states have their lowest point below sea level?

Answer: 2

California (Bad Water, Death Valley at minus 282 feet) and Louisiana (New Orleans at minus 8 feet) are the only 2 states that have low points that are below sea level.
7. In what state is the geographical center of the United States located?

Answer: South Dakota

I hope you didn't forget Alaska and Hawaii. The geographic center of the United States is located in South Dakota about 30 miles northeast of Belle Fourche. By the way, Lebanon, Kansas is the geographic center of the continental (48 states) United States.
8. Which of the following cites is westernmost?

Answer: Reno, Nevada

Strange as it may seem, Reno, Nevada at 119 degrees, 47 seconds west, is the westernmost city. Also of note is that Spokane, located in eastern Washington, is farther west than San Diego!
9. Which of the following cities is westernmost?

Answer: Miami, Florida

Hard to believe, isn't it? At 80 degrees, 16 minutes west, Miami is the westernmost of these four cities. Just as strange is that Buffalo, New York is the easternmost of these four cities at 78 degrees, 44 minutes west.
10. What is the largest lake in the United States that is entirely within one state?

Answer: Great Salt Lake

Located entirely within Utah, the Great Salt Lake covers 2117 square miles. Lake Michigan (57,800 square miles) is the largest lake entirely within the US but it borders four states. I hope you enjoyed this quiz.
