Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This photo was taken at a national park near Moab, Utah. Which two national parks are nearest Moab?

Answer: Canyonlands and Arches

Grand Canyon and Saguaro are two national parks in Arizona, and Death Valley National Park is in California. And while Capitol Reef National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park are in the southern half of Utah, it is Canyonlands and Arches that are in closest proximity to Moab. Arches National Park is just a few miles from the city, while Canyonlands is about 30 miles away.
2. Which of the following national parks is NOT found in Utah?

Answer: Rocky Mountain National Park

Though the Rocky Mountains do indeed pass through Utah, Rocky Mountain National Park is located in Colorado. This wintry photo includes a pine tree, one of the many stunning trees and/or shrubs found in Bryce Canyon National Park. The park contains several species of pine trees, spruce, fir, and others in its array of flora.
3. What is the highest peak in Zion National Park?

Answer: Horse Ranch Mountain

Elephant Butte is the highest elevation in Arches National Park, and Delicate Arch is the illustrious rock formation in the same park. Horse Ranch Mountain is Zion National Park's highest peak at an elevation of 8,733 feet (2,662 meters). It is located in the Kolob Canyons.
4. What is the name of the rock formation formerly known as Temple of Aeolus that provides a magnificent view of Zion Canyon?

Answer: Angels Landing

This awe-inspiring view at Angels Landing has been accessible by trail since the 1920s. Watch your step - the National Park Service itself recognizes several accidental deaths from falls from this lookout. The hike to reach Angels Landing roughly follows the path of the Virgin River.
5. The Virgin River, seen here in Zion National Park, flows through three of the following states. Which one does NOT contain any portion of the Virgin River?

Answer: California

The Virgin River is about 162 miles long, and manages to pass through the three states of Utah, Nevada, and Arizona. The Virgin River Gorge is a canyon near the Arizona/Utah border formed by the Virgin River. The Virgin River was originally named Adams River after John Quincy Adams, who was president at the time.
6. The Court of the Patriarchs in Zion National Park is a pair of cliffs made of which rock?

Answer: Sandstone

The Court of the Patriarchs is a trio of sandstone cliffs named for the biblical patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In addition to the stunning, vertical escarpments such as the Court of the Patriarchs and the view from Weeping Rock trail pictured here, there are plenty of arches and other unusual or unique features to appreciate the diversity of landforms within such a small area. Hidden Arch, Jughandle Arch, "The Skull", and Kolob Arch are four of the many arches within Zion National Park.
7. This photo featuring snow-capped hoodoos is taken from which national park in Utah?

Answer: Bryce Canyon National Park

It may look like a terranean coral scene, but this is Utah's Bryce Canyon National Park. These hoodoos are created by something called 'frost weathering', which refers to geological processes due to the freezing of water into ice. If the sight of these stony pillars does not give you a majestic sense of wonder, check out wide variety of alternative names of hoodoo: tent rock, earth pyramid, and fairy chimney.
8. Is there snow year round at this pictured national park?

Answer: No

While the snow adds a beautiful natural distinction and contrast to these already otherworldly views, it is possible to see Bryce Canyon in all its reddish-orange glory without any white clumps of precipitation. If you wish to go camping and awaken in these environs, the summer months feature high temperatures upwards of 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 C), and lows above 50 degrees in July and August (10 C).
9. What is the name of the expansive stretch of sedimentary rock that reaches both Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park?

Answer: Grand Staircase

Devils Tower is in Wyoming, and the Devil's Slide is a unique rock formation in Utah. The Grand Staircase is the stretch of sedimentary rock extensive enough to reach both Bryce Canyon and Zion. The three main regions of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument include Kaiparowits Plateau and the Canyons of the Escalante and the Grand Staircase. Geologist Clarence Dutton first came up with the concept of the Grand Staircase as a stairway emerging from the Grand Canyon.
10. Wall Street is the name of a trail one can hike in Bryce Canyon National Park.

Answer: True

Wall Street is Bryce Canyon National Park's slot canyon - a type of canyon comprised of long, narrow, eroded sedimentary rock. Utah is replete with slot canyons, with some in Zion National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and Capitol Reef National Park.

While these breathtaking canyon vistas encompass large swaths of the area, and despite its name, Bryce Canyon refers to a collection of natural amphitheaters rather than a canyon.
