Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Not a count from the last census but where is Seven Persons?

Answer: Alberta

A translation of the First Nation words "Kitsuki-a-tapi", meaning 7 persons. Name of a local creek where seven Cree were killed in battle.
2. Zexwzaxw Glacier doesn't sound like it is anywhere in Canada, but it is. Can you put it in its right location?

Answer: British Columbia

Actually pronounced "zuk zow". A Lil'wat first nation word meaning soft, or mushy snow.
3. Ebb and Flow are terms normally used to describe tidal conditions but it is also a place somewhere in the country. Where?

Answer: Manitoba

A first nation reserve north west of Winnipeg.
4. If you are a canoeist you might come across Aachikaayusaakaasich Portage in your travels in which province or territory?

Answer: Quebec

At the moment the first place name listed in the country. Way up north on Hudson Bay, the name is in the Inuit language. I believe it means "a straight portage between the rocks" and a portage is of course a place where goods and boats are carried overland between navigable waters.
5. If comedians ever needed a patron saint Saint-Louis-du-Ha!-Ha! would be a sure-fire natural choice but it is a real town in one of these provinces.

Answer: Quebec

Haha may be an old French word for an obstruction or obstacle and Louis may have been one of the first area colonists, Louis Marquis or even Louis-Antoine Proulx, a one time vicar of nearby Rivière-du-Loup.
6. Wawa sounds like one of the first words a baby says, after "Mama" of course. However, it has a more practical application as the name of a town in which province?

Answer: Ontario

Situated on the Trans-Canada Highway on the northern shores of Lake Superior.
Reputed to be the worst place to try and get a ride if you are hitch-hiking across the country.
7. Sounds like it might have been derived from a Latin source but where is Ecum Secum?

Answer: Nova Scotia

A rural community on the Eastern shore. It is a name derived, not from Latin but from the Micmac first nation language which translates as 'a red house'.
8. Leading Tickles must be a place with a lot of happy residents. Where is this light-hearted town?

Answer: Newfoundland

Name was changed to this in 2005 by the provincial government. Previously it was called Leading Tickles West. Residents maybe felt that they wanted to be
more unique and not be confused with nearby Leading Tickles East or Leading Tickles South! L.T. North doesn't appear to have existed. Newfoundland has more than its share of odd place names.
9. Crapaud has no connection to any dice gambling game and is nowhere in the vicinity of Las Vegas but it is a town somewhere in Canada. East?, west?, north?, south ?- you pick.

Answer: Prince Edward Island

The community of Westmorland was renamed in 1840. Rivière-aux-Crapaud was the name given to the nearby Westmorland River by the French. It translates as River of Toads. Crapaud was also a derogatory name given by English soldiers to their French adversaries in the Napoleonic War.
10. It certainly isn't the latest sports arena but where might you come across Midnight Dome?

Answer: Yukon

A hill southeast of Dawson City affording panoramic views of the city and Yukon River. Many of the 19th century gold rush miners are buried in the hillside cemetery here.
