Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2007, the classic novel "On The Road" celebrated a special anniversary. How many years previously had Jack Kerouac's novel first been published?

Answer: 50 years

The novel was written in just three weeks in 1951, but was not published until 1957. Seen by many as the iconic work of the Beat Generation, "On The Road" is narrated by Sal Paradise and tells the story of his travels across the USA and Mexico, starting from New York City in 1947 and ending back there a year later.
2. 2007 saw T. Rex fans remember the death of their idol, Marc Bolan, in a car crash how many years before?

Answer: 30 years

Bolan was killed when the car in which he was traveling, driven by his then partner Gloria Jones, spun off the road and struck a tree in Barnes, in south- west London. Bolan was killed instantly, whilst Jones received minor injuries.

The site of the crash has become a shrine to the singer, who had significant success in the UK pop charts in the late 60s and early 70s with songs such as "Jeepster", "Get It On" and "20th Century Boy".
3. The Edinburgh Festival reached a milestone age in 2007. How old was it?

Answer: 60 years

Founded in the wake of World War II, its founders believed that the Festival was a means to re-unite Europe through culture and 'provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit'.
4. 2007 also saw a special anniversary for the Mars Bar. How many years had it been since the first bar went on sale in the UK?

Answer: 75 years

What the UK knows as the "Mars Bar" is somewhat different to what the US knows as the "Mars Bar". The UK "Mars Bar" is similar to the US "Milky Way" bar. Confusingly, the UK also has a bar called the "Milky Way" which is different again.

According to the Slough History Online website, the "Mars Bar" was invented in Slough and was registered on 17 May 1932. Now produced by Masterfoods, a company formed from the merger of Pedigree Masterfoods and the Mars company, more than 3 million Mars bars are produced each day.
5. The anniversary of the birth of British poet and painter, William Blake, was celebrated in 2007. How many years previously had he been born?

Answer: 250 years

Known by schoolchildren up and down the UK as the author of the words to the popular hymn "Jerusalem", Blake was born on November 28, 1757 in London.

Blake achieved little success in his lifetime either in the poetic or artistic spheres but he is highly regarded nowadays. On the 200th anniversary of his birth, he was recognised with the installation of a memorial to him in Westminster Abbey, and Aleister Crowley annointed him as a Gnostic saint.
6. 2007 was a big year for Scouts. A special jamboree was held to commemorate how many years of the Scout movement?

Answer: 100 years

Lord Baden-Powell held his first Scouting encampment on Brownsea Island, an island in Poole Harbour, Dorset, England in 1907 and published his book "Scouting for Boys" a year later. By 2007 the Scout movement had more than 28 million members.

The 21st World Scouting Jamboree, which celebrated the centenary of the movement, was also held in England - this time in Chelmsford, Essex.
7. 2007 marked the anniversary of the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales in a car crash in Paris how many years previously?

Answer: 10 years

Much controversy surrounds the events of the night on which Princess Diana died, along with the driver of her car, Henri Paul and her partner Dodi Fayed. The crash occurred in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel on August 31, 1997 when their Mercedes struck a pillar at speed.

Many claims have been made about the circumstances of the crash and it took until 10 years after the event for a full judicial inquiry into the events to be held in the UK.
8. A much trumpeted anniversary in 2007 was that of the Slave Trade Act which abolished the slave trade in the British Empire. Which anniversary was being commemorated?

Answer: 200 years

The act was passed in March 1807 and became law on May 1, 1807. A previous bill had been passed by the House of Commons in 1805 but was blocked by the House of Lords. The 1807 Act succeeded after an impassioned speech in the Lords by Whig Prime Minister, Lord Grenville.

The act did not outlaw slavery but did prevent the trade in slaves. Because this put the British Empire at a potential disadvantage, the British campaigned to have the practice banned in other countries as well.

The parliamentary leader of the abolitionist movement, William Wilberforce, continued to campaign against slavery after the passing of the act and eventually, on July 26 1833, the Emancipation Bill was passed, banning the practice of slavery and granting freedom to all those enslaved. Just three days after the success of the campaign, Wilberforce passed away at the age of 73.
9. 2007 represented a big anniversary in the history of Oklahoma. How many years was it since Oklahoma was admitted as a US state?

Answer: 100 years

Oklahoma was admitted as the 46th State of the USA on November 16th 1907. Statehood was granted by the Enabling Act, more commonly known as the Hamilton Bill, which provided for the admission of Oklahoma Territory and the Indian Territory into the Union as one state. The bill also provided for the admission of New Mexico and Arizona as one state but this was rejected by its inhabitants.

The Indian Territory was land set aside for Native Americans and its borders were set by the Indian Intercourse Act of 1834.
10. The continent of America commemorated an important anniversary in 2007. Martin Waldseemüller's world map, in which the continent was first given its current name, was published how many years previously?

Answer: 500 years

Waldseemüller was a German cartographer working in Lorraine at the time of the publication of the "Universalis Cosmographia" in April 1507. The map was possibly the first in which America was shown as a separate continent rather than being part of "the indies" or Asia.

In his map, the newly discovered continent was named in honour of Amerigo Vespucci, the Florentine cartographer and explorer, who was believed to have played a significant role in the discovery of the continent. Accounts of Vespucci's voyages were published in "Cosmographiae Introductio", a book that accompanied the publication of the map, along with the explanation of the choice of name for the continent.

However, there was much dispute about the veracity of these accounts and in 1513 Waldseemüller published an atlas which no longer used the name "America" but referred to the land as "Terra Incognita".
