1. Which famous philosopher suffered a mental breakdown on this day in 1889?

Answer: Friedrich Nietzsche

While walking through the Piazza Carlo Alberto in Turin, Nietzsche saw a horse being whipped. He ran across the square, threw his arms around the horse's neck to shield it and collapsed to the ground. From then on, he spoke incoherently, screamed repeatedly and was often delirious, unaware of where he was. He finally died in 1900, under the care of his sister, Elizabeth.
2. In 1777, George Washington defeated General Cornwallis's forces. What was the name of the battle?

Answer: Battle of Princeton

The night before, George Washington and his troops managed to repulse a British attack at the Battle of the Assunpink Creek. Washington went on to become America's first president, while General Cornwallis was later appointed Governor-General of India.
3. In 1431, Joan of Arc was handed over to the Bishop Pierre Cauchon. What war did Joan famously fight in?

Answer: Hundred Years' War

The English government bought Joan from Duke Philip of Burgundy and she was handed over to the Bishop on this day. Joan was found guilty of heresy and executed by burning on the 30 May 1431 in Rouen.
4. In 1848, Joseph Jenkins Roberts was sworn in as the first president of which independent African republic?

Answer: Liberia

Mr Roberts was born in America, but moved to Liberia in 1829. In 1833 Roberts was appointed High Sheriff of the colony and in 1839 he was appointed Vice-Governor by the American Colonization Society. After Liberia achieved its independence from America, Roberts was elected the first president.
5. Today in 1870 construction began on which world famous bridge?

Answer: Brooklyn Bridge

The bridge was originally referred to as the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, but was formally named the Brooklyn Bridge by the city government in 1915. At the time of its completion, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, but it has been surpassed in length by the Akashi-Kaikyô Bridge in Japan.

Answer: Fidel Castro

Catholics were forbidden to support Communist governments by decree of Pope Pius XII in 1949. Castro was raised a Roman Catholic, but did not practice the religion. Castro appeared side by side with Pope John Paul II in his 1998 tour of Cuba.
7. Which former American first lady was born today in 1879?

Answer: Grace Coolidge

Grace Coolidge was the first lady from 2nd August 1923 until 4th March 1929. In 1931 she was voted one of America's twelve greatest living women. After their term in office, the Coolidges retired to "The Beeches", their home in Northampton.
8. Which Formula 1 driver was born today in 1969?

Answer: Michael Schumacher

Schumacher has won the F1 World Championship seven times and currently advises and occassionally test drives for his former team, Ferrari. He is an ambassador for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
9. Alois Hitler, Adolf's father, died today in 1903. Where is the Hitler family from?

Answer: Austria

Alois Hitler is the first "Hitler". The identity of his father is debated, but is generally regarded as one of the Hiedler brothers, Johann Georg and Johann Nepomuk. Alois was born just north of Vienna in Lower Austria.
10. Today is the feast day of which saint?

Answer: St Genevieve

Genevieve was a peasant girl born in Nanterre. At the age of 15 she told Germanus (later St Germain) that she wished to live only for God. With his support, she did just that and is now the patron saint of Paris, where she lived with her god-mother.
