1. Which of the following ancient cities was the capital of the Persian Empire at the time of the war with Athens and Sparta?

Answer: Persepolis

The Persian Empire was a vast multi-cultural empire founded by Cyrus the Great who came to the throne in 559 BC, when Persia was a vassal state of the Median Empire. At its height, the Persian Empire stretched from the northern border of modern day India to modern day Turkey.
2. We all know that, according to the myth, Mars was the father of Romulus and Remus but who was their mother?

Answer: Rhea Silvia

Their mother Rhea Silvia was one of the priestesses of the Goddess Vesta in the city state of Alba Longa. Romulus and Remus were brought up by a wolf and after killing his brother, Romulus founded his city in 753 BC.
3. The Peloponnesian War pitted the two main Greek powers - Athens and Sparta - against each other. Who was the Athenian leader at the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War?

Answer: Pericles

After the death of Pericles Greek politics lacked a single strong leader and two new leaders, Cleon and Nicias, took to the stage. Both were from humble origins they both wanted the best for Athens. However, what was 'best' was a cause for debate.

Carthage was founded in c. 814 BC and grew till it controlled a large empire but it was finally defeated by Rome in 146 BC.

10. What is the literal translation of the Persian name of the Persian king Xerxes?

Answer: Ruling over Heroes

His name, Xerxes, meant Ruling over Heroes but his title, Shahanshah, meant King of Kings and he really was, ruling over a vast Anatolian empire. It was a name that struck fear in the hearts of Greeks and awe in the hearts of Persians.
