Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Prior to the invention of baby strollers as we know them today, how were the first baby carriages designed to mobilize?

Answer: pulled by dogs or Shetland ponies

Those first baby carriages, pulled by dogs or Shetland ponies, were too large and bulky and proved clearly that streamlining was needed. They really weren't an improvement over the Native American method of using a cradleboard, covered in cloth, held in by laces running across the cloth.

The cradleboard was then strapped to the parent's back. Shawls and slings have probably always been used, even nets as the people of Papua New Guinea used.
2. British landscape architect William Kent devised the first baby stroller in 1733. He made it for the Duke of Devonshire, a title held by members of what family in English Peerage?

Answer: Cavendish

Though all these are types of bananas, only Cavendish is a name in British royalty, and William Kent crafted the baby stroller out of wood, wicker, and brass for the Duke of Devonshire to play with his children. By the middle of the 19th-century, the stroller design began to see some additions and tweaks: brakes, foldability, and accessories like parasols and umbrellas.
3. In the 1880s what did William Richardson invent that eased the state of mind of a baby in the stroller?

Answer: reversible seat

William Richardson fashioned a stroller with a reversible seat so that the baby could then be positioned facing the parent or whoever was pushing the carriage. This is especially helpful when the baby is younger. Richardson also designed the stroller's wheels to roll and pivot individually, making them easier to manoeuver.
4. In the post World War I era, many safety features were added. Which of these was NOT one of them?

Answer: flame retardant frame

From the 1920s to 1930s, safety was emphasized, and baby strollers were modified with features that are still in use to this day: deeper seats, easy-to-use foot brakes, lower-built durable frames, and sturdier and thicker wheels. Strollers were being made with new materials too, such as chrome, plastic, and rubber.
5. Six of these films featured scenes in which baby carriages were in peril! Which two films below did NOT feature any baby carriages in peril?

Answer: "Adventures in Baby Sitting" and "Baby's Day Out"

"Battleship Potemkin" features one of the most influential sequences in the history of cinema in the Odessa Steps scene, whereby a baby carriage gets away from a mother who collapses dying, and "The Untouchables" borrowed from that bit of film history in a splendid shoot out sequence in a train station. Fortunately in the latter film, Andy Garcia is on hand to rescue the carriage.
"Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult" parodies that "Untouchables" sequence with a very funny Railway Hall Stairs shootout scene. In "Hook" Peter Pan recalls being in a baby carriage, and he narrates in the flashback how his birth mother forgets to watch the pram and it rolls away. Down a hill it rolls and then tips over in the rain, spilling out Peter.
In "Ghostbusters 2" Sigourney Weaver's Dana seeks out the Ghostbusters' help when her baby stroller is supernaturally sent rolling by itself into a busy intersection. In "Speed" there was a horrifying scare when the bus Sandra Bullock drives plows into a baby carriage as the woman pushing it jumps out of the way--we gasp, but thankfully we see that the baby carriage was filled with cans collected by the woman, and everyone, including Keanu Reeves and Bullock, breathe sighs of relief.
By the way, "Adventures in Baby Sitting" and "Baby's Day Out" both spare us any baby carriage mishaps.
6. In the 1960s, this retired test pilot used his technical expertise to invent the lightweight baby stroller with a collapsible support system. He founded the company that still bears his name of these sought-after strollers. Who was he?

Answer: Owen Finlay Maclaren

He decided to try and lighten the load for his daughter, whose pram was a bit too bulky and heavy to carry. By 1967 he created the umbrella stroller, that had a more compact design, making it more convenient for travel due to its lighter weight and collapsibility.

His aeronautical expertise sure came in handy--the merely six pound stroller folded like an umbrella, so now parents could hold an infant in one arm and be able to fold up the aluminum carriage with the other arm. He founded the Maclaren company.
7. In 2001, what was the name of the stroller that became a status symbol when it came to the USA from Amsterdam?

Answer: Bugaboo's Frog

American expatriate Kari Boiler saw this stroller everywhere she looked on the streets of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. She persuaded Bugaboo to put her in charge of starting up the carriage's American operations. The stroller hit it big when she managed to get it into an episode of TV's "Sex and the City." The fanbase kept expanding, making for long waiting lists as the company introduced new models.
8. Jogging strollers are popular these days -- which of these is NOT true about them?

Answer: Even when jogging the ride is smoother than a normal stroller when walking

Well, the jogging strollers do have amenities to mitigate the more vigorous ride--like for instance, the lightweight frame and air-filled tires help out, but we could hardly expect that they make for an even smoother ride when put into fast motion. A study by the Henry ford Hospital revealed that jogging with strollers increased runners' heart rates by 3-5% over those jogging without strollers. Oxygen consumption increased by 2%, and women burned 4 to 21 extra calories per 30-minute jog with stroller, while men burned from 4 to 41 more calories.

The results also varied depending on the model of stroller.
9. In 2015, the Silver Cross Balmoral Pram made headlines when which celebrity couple pushed their second child around in it?

Answer: Prince William and Kate Middleton

Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton set forth with their second child Princess Charlotte in the vintage-inspired stroller. the pram had luxe chrome touches and detailing was hand-stitched. It wasn't cheap though. it cost $3,999. About the cost of the average car in 1973. Four years later, in 2019, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle bucked tradition and went with the Bugaboo instead of the Silver Cross.
10. The Silver Cross and the Bugaboo are among the most expensive baby strollers in the world. Which of these is another of the most expensive in the world?

Answer: Orbit Baby

All of the above are automobile models, except of course for the Orbit Baby. (GMC Acadia, Ariel Atom, Hyundai Genesis). The Orbit Baby is one of the most expensive strollers in the mainstream market -- many celebrities are photographed entrusting their little ones in its enclosure. The Baby O2 is a popular model in this line of strollers.
