Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, also known as the Soviet Union or U.S.S.R., was the largest country in the world from the time of its creation in 1921-22 to the time it broke up in 1991. Twenty months prior to its official dissolution in April 1990 it passed a law stating what?

Answer: A republic could secede if two-thirds of the republic's citizens voted to do so

A law already existed in the USSR that allowed for secession, but the revised law of 1990 detailed how exactly a nation would exercise this right. The (arguable) beginning of the end of the USSR occurred in 1988 when Estonia decided to secede by passing the Estonian Sovereignty Declaration, which stated their independence. Lithuania and Georgia followed suit soon thereafter.
2. The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia existed until 1992, at which point the future Slovenia and Croatia decided they'd be better off without it and seceded. What country, former or still currently existing, was NOT part of this former Republic?

Answer: Greece

By 1992, the last remaining piece of Yugoslavia changed its name to Serbia and Montenegro, a country which, 14 years later, split into its two components.
3. A time when attempted secession proved unsuccessful was the 1860s, where in the United States, eleven states declared themselves over a period of half a year to be part of their own separate country called the Confederate States of America. Which was the first state to declare it was not a part of the U.S. any more?

Answer: South Carolina

South Carolina's declaration of independence on December 20, 1860 started the conflict. Texas was the seventh state to join the new Confederate States of America which began to form on February 1, 1861. North Carolina was the eleventh and last state to secede, on May 20, 1861. Utah didn't even exist as a state yet, and wouldn't until 30 years after the end of the war.
4. Which of these countries is paired incorrectly with the country it seceded and declared independence from?

Answer: Iceland from Finland

Bangladesh declared its independence on March 26, 1971, preceding a war which lasted until December 1971. Paraguay seceded on May 14, 1811, and Madagascar declared its independence June 26, 1960. Iceland to belonged to Denmark (not Finland) prior to 1 December 1918.
5. On July 9, 2011, South Sudan officially declared its independence from Sudan. Exactly half a year earlier, a six day poll was conducted, open to everyone in the area, about whether or not they should secede. An agreement was made that if more than 60% voted to secede, it would happen. Out of the people who voted, what percentage voted to secede?

Answer: 98.83%

Practically everyone living in the area wanted to be independent. The poll was the result of two different civil wars collectively spanning 38 years of fighting. Part of the peace agreement after the end of the second war was to allow South Sudan to operate as an autonomous region for six years, from January 9, 2005 to January 9, 2011, then conduct the aforementioned poll and proceed based on the result.
6. Nazi Germany invaded Austria (which was Hitler's homeland) on March 12, 1938, and incorporated it into Germany. How long was it before Austria regain full independence?

Answer: 17 years

Though it declared its independence again on April 27, 1945, just three days before the death of Hitler it was placed under allied occupation and didn't become fully sovereign again till 1955.
7. Texas was once part of Mexico. The Texas Revolution changed all this, and on March 2, 1836, the Republic of Texas became an independent nation. For how long did it exist as an independent republic before it was annexed by the United States?

Answer: Ten years

In this ten year span of time, the Republic of Texas had five presidents, printed currency (strangely, they only printed paper money), appointed a Congress and a Supreme Court, and established diplomatic relations with many larger and more powerful countries.

However, mostly due to inflation caused by overprinting money, this new country ended up badly in debt, and so agreed to become a part of the US in exchange for it taking on Texas's debts.
8. Speaking of secession from Mexico during the early 1800s, the Republic of Yucatán seemingly couldn't decide whether it wanted to be independent or not. It broke away from Mexico in 1823 but officially became part of Mexico again about half a year later. Then, again in 1841, it declared its separateness, this time lasting seven years before re-rejoining Mexico in 1848. The flag of Yucatán had five stars on it; what did these stars represent?

Answer: The five districts the country was divided into

These five districts were named Campeche, Izamal, Mérida, Tekax and Valladolid. The five stars were set on a green background on the left side of the flag.

The Republic of Yucatán went through two civil wars during its existence, the first lasting from 1810 to 1821 and the second occurring in the years of 1840 and 1841.
9. For a long time, Belgium's land was part of the Netherlands. The Belgium Revolution, which started in August of 1830 and raged for almost a year, is what separated the two. Which of these is NOT a reason for the future Belgians starting their revolt?

Answer: Oppression of some of the basic rights of the people in the area

The revolt was mostly caused by built up tension from a cultural difference and the north trying to impose its culture on the south. However, the revolt officially started after a performance of the opera La Muette de Portici, translated into English as The Mute Girl of Portici, written by Daniel François Esprit Auber.

After the performance on August 25, 1830, people ran into the streets and started rioting, yelling and attempting to take control of government buildings. This may be the only time in history where an opera performance sparked a secession revolution.
10. The Democratic Republic of the Congo had been independent for only eleven days when the State of Katanga in turn declared its independence from it. Although it failed to become its own separate country, which unlikely (at least at first glance) country helped Katanga by supplying it with military support?

Answer: Belgium

Belgium was actually more involved in the situation than one might think. For 52 years, Belgium owned Democratic Republic of the Congo (during this time it was called the Belgian Congo), and Belgium was the country that the Congo seceded from eleven days earlier.
