Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following pilots achieved 'ace' status in WW2 (28.0 kills) and Korea (6.5 kills)?

Answer: Col. Francis S. Gabreski

While all of the above were aces in one of the above wars only Gabreski was an ace in both. Col. Walker M. Mahurin had 20.5 WW2 kills and 3.5 Korean War kills. Maj. Donald E. Adams had 4.0 WW2 kills and 6.5 Korean War kills. Maj. James Jabara had 1.5 WW2 kills and was the second highest scoring American ace of the Korean War with 16.

Other pilots who achieved the same feat as Gabreski (in brackets is the number of WW2 kills followed by Korea War kills) were: Maj. George A. Davis (7.0 & 14.0), Lt. Col. Vermont Garrison (7.3 & 10) Maj. James P. Hagerstrom (6.0 & 8.5), Maj. John Bolt (6.0 & 6.0), Maj. William T. Whisner (5.5 & 15.5) and Col. Harrison R. Thyng (5.0 & 5.0)
2. The greatest ace of WW2 (Erich Hartmann of the Luftwaffe) had how many aerial victories?

Answer: 352

All of Hartmann's 352 aerial victories were achieved over the Eastern (Russian) front. It is said that he acquired so many victories because of the poor Russian aircraft and pilots at the start of the war.
3. During Vietnam only two pilots had 5 aerial victories accredited to them. They were Randy Cunningham and Steve Ritchie. Which force of the defense did they call home?

Answer: U.S. Navy and the Airforce

Randy Cunningham, USN, and Steve Ritchie, USAF, both shot down 5 MiG's.
4. The greatest ace in Vietnam was Vietnamese, he flew a MiG 21 and his name was Nguyen Van Coc. How many aerial victories did Van Coc claim to have had?

Answer: 9

The U.S Navy/Airforce/Marines can account for 7 planes lost to Nguyen Van Coc, they were 3 F-4 Phantoms and 4 F-105 Thunderchiefs.
5. Journalists dubbed Manfred von Richthofen's Jagdgeschwader 1 the what?

Answer: Flying Circus

80 kills including the famous British flier Major Lanoe George Hawker. But who shot down the baron? Was it the Canadian pilot Captain Roy Brown or was it Australian gun operators who have also claimed the kill?
6. Seven of the top eight aces in the Pacific theatre all had one thing in common. They all flew what type of aircraft?

Answer: The P-38 Lightning

The only other plane in the top eight was the P-47. The number one ace in the Pacific Theatre was Richard Bong with 40 aerial victories.
7. The Commonwealth's greatest ace of WW2 was a South African with over 40 aerial victories. Who was he?

Answer: Marmaduke Thomas St John Pattle

All of the above were celebrated South African pilots (all aces) but it was Sq. Leader Marmaduke Thomas with 40+ kills who was best Commonwealth ace, in terms of victories, in WW2. Thanks to Spanishliz for info on Marmaduke's proper name!
8. Japanese aerial victories are more unreliable than other countries however, which of the following Japanese pilots claimed 202 victories (the greatest of all Japanese pilots)?

Answer: Tetsuzo Iwamoto

The figures are unreliable because no official documentation was kept. The pilots claims of kills were kept privately. Although Tetsuzo Iwamoto claimed 202 kills only 64 were confirmed compared to the 86 confirmed (174 claimed) of Nishizawa Hiroyoshi.
9. Soviet pilots were out-classed by German aircraft at the start of war in the Eastern Front until the introduction of the Yak-3 fighter. Which of the following pilots lead the way against the Germans scoring 62 aerial victories?

Answer: Ivan Nikitovich Kozhedub

All of the above pilots did well, scoring 50+ kills. Rechalov had 56. Ivanovich has 53 and Gulayev had 56.
10. Finally, who was the leading female ace of the war?

Answer: Yekaterina Vasilyevna Budanova

The Soviet Union employed quite a high number of female pilots, and the four listed all achieved ace status. Budanova destroyed (a confirmed) 11 enemy aircraft but claimed 20. I hope you enjoyed my quiz.
