7. President George Washington established the 'Badge of Military Merit' as the first combat decoration in US history. The first recipients fought in which war?

Answer: American Revolutionary War

After the war, the award was disused with one general-in-chief citing the honor itself was too European. The 'Medal of Honor', as it is called today, should not be confused with the 'Congressional Medal of Honor'. The 'Medal of Honor' is the United States' highest and most distinguished personal military decoration that may be awarded to a military service member who was distinguished by acts of valor and gallantry.

8. Which Russian ship suffered a famous mutiny in 1905, a forerunner to the Russian Revolution?

Answer: Potemkin

The mutiny on the Potemkin was sparked by the crew's refusal to eat maggot-infested meat. Socialist mutineers ran the ship from June 27-July 7 1905, surviving attempts by government forces, some of which themselves mutinied, to capture or sink the ship. After being returned to government control, the ship was renamed Panteleimon.

The mutiny is the subject of the well-known, highly acclaimed movie, "Battleship Potemkin" (1925) by Sergei Eisenstein.

10. Captain Pedro Alvares Cabral, a Templar from the Order of Christ (established by King Denis, negotiating with Pope John XXII for its recognition) was greeted by nude natives of what present day country when he discovered it in 1500?

Answer: Brazil

It was the first time Europeans arrived to this new land, which would become known as Brazil. The crew faced all those naked women, which was a big deal since even married couples in Europe were full of "Christian shame" regarding viewing the naked body. Captain Cabral sent just two men from the boats to land ashore. One was a very tall, extremely happy, uninhibited man and the other was a pipe player from an ancient Celtic region in North Portugal called Minho. Once ashore, the piper started to play.

The natives first thought it was a weapon, but when they heard those musical sounds and saw the tall man smiling and dancing to the strange new sound, the natives approached, they looked closer, and the natives started to dance along as well. Conflict was avoided and the first inroads were established in founding Brazil.
