What major general during this war became the 12th President of the United States?

Answer: Zachary Taylor

After being elected in the 1848, Taylor led the country for only one year, when he suddenly died. Some said he died of arsenic poisoning, but this was later disproved.
2. In 1859, "The Origin of Species" was published. Who wrote "The Origin of Species?"

Answer: Charles Darwin

This book stated that creatures evolved over time, to better adapt to their environment. This started the "Creation vs. Evolution" that is still being fought today.

After winning the Franco-Prussian war, the North Germany Confederation united with the South German states. The German Empire was proclaimed in Versailles in France in 1871 and lasted as an imperial monarchy till 1918, at the end of World War I. From then till the end of World War II it still called itself a "Reich" (empire), even during the Weimar years (1919-1932).

The conflict started in 1877, when Balkan states start to rise against the Ottomans. The Russians decided to help their fellow Orthdox Christians and tried to set up client states. One year later the Treaty of Berlin was signed, which confrimed the independence of Romania and Serbia, but not of Bulgaria.

Answer: Korea and Taiwan

The war started when Japan began to fear the expansion of Russia, believing this was their only chance to get natural resources before Russia ... so they invaded China. They got Korea, Taiwan, and a few small islands, plus lots of money.

The first recorded suggestion of building a canal in that area was made by Emperor Charles V in 1534. The first attempt was made by the French in the late 19th century but was unsuccessful.

Bingham was an United States senator for Connecticut, he was born in Honolulu because his father, and grandfather were missionaries in Hawaii. Later in 1911 when he was a Yale professor he went to Peru to do some archaelogical research, and there he found Machu Picchu.

European inteference had weakened China badly. So, Sun Yet-Sen organized some men and overthrew the emperor in 1912. Yet-Sen became the first president of the Chinese Republic. 37 years later Mao Zedong and the Communist party overthrew the Republic, and Chiang Kai-Shek the current president fled to Taiwan and restablished the republic there.

Charles Chaplin was born in England in 1889. He had an amazing acting, and directing career. He died at age 88 in 1977.
