The Iron Age brought better weapons and tools and made life just that little bit easier for our ancestors. It also saw an increase in violence and war, however.

A fulacht fiadh was an oven, a quern was for grinding grain, a souterrain was an underground storage room. A crannog was accommodation built on a man made island at the edge of a lake. The Aztecs had very similar constructions.

This is the oldest form of writing in Ireland. It is found on standing stones. Ireland did not use the modern alphabet until the mid fifth century when Christianity came.

Roofs were made from straw, so was bedding. Most of the houses were made of timber. A curfew was imposed every night to make sure that fires were quenched.

Master craftsmen formed themselves into guilds to organise trade and maintain standards. Each trade had its own guild.

Answer: Punishment

This involved being publicly punished for minor offences, by having your ankles held in a wooden frame so that you could not move. It was quite common for the citizens to add to your misery by throwing refuse and shouting verbal abuse at you.

Answer: Milan

Ludovico Sforza was Leonardo da Vinci's patron in Milan.

Answer: Statue/painting

The statue/painting shows the dead Christ in His mother's arms. Several artists carved the design but the most famous has to be that of Michaelangelo in the Vatican. Incidently, it was the only statue which Michaelangelo signed.
